Up-the-middle position player Teenagers in High A since 2006 w/wRC+ >100 (min 10 pa): Carlos Correa Kyle Tucker Kenni Gomez
The first two pitchers from this year's draft class are now on a roster... Ramsey David (10) and Danny Trehey (UDFA) were both assigned to Fayetteville. Trehey signed as an undrafted free agent out of Florida Atlantic right after the draft ended.
The Astros also signed LHP Brandon Walter yesterday. Walter, who turns 28 in September, was a 26th-round pick of the Red Sox out of Delaware in 2019. He has not pitched at all this season due to a rotator cuff issue. Walter was DFAed in July after Boston acquired Lucas Sims and was released on August 2.
Since 2006, Astros AA pitchers with >40 ip, 22 or younger, K/9 >9, xfip <4: Josh Hader David Paulino Frances Martes Cionel Perez Cristian Javier Hunter Brown Jose Fleury Kyle Smith
Zach Cole hit his 8th homer (9 on the season) for Corpus. Still striking out way too much, but he's handled AA reasonably well. Too bad he missed a good chunk of this season...
Yeah that k rate won’t play. wRC+ >130 is usually pretty safe territory for when a guy is ready to move up, but not if they’re striking out that much. Since 2006, only 3 Astros prospects have >50 pa in AA with a k rate >30% and a wRC+ >130: Cole, Telvin Nash, and Colton Shaver. Not great company.
Luis Encarnacion has homered in both games of Asheville's doubleheader; he hit a solo shot in game 1 and a two-run homer in game 2. Encarnacion now has 10 home runs on the season (9 Asheville, 1 Fayetteville).
I’m bummed he hasn’t played more catcher. If he were able to stick there his bat starts to look a lot more attractive, but as a 1B/DH he probably doesn’t have enough power to make it.
Trevor Austin, an undrafted free agent from Missouri, went 2-4 for Fayetteville today; this was the fourth straight game in which he picked up two hits. As a pro, he has a hit in 7 of his first 8 games. Most of his playing time so far has come at 3B and 2B.
Melton is similar to Jake Meyers. I haven't seen enough of Melton in the outfield, but I assume he isn't as good in CF as Jake. Regardless, 111 mph exit velocity in AAA is a great thing. I have never been too high on Melton because of the lack of a hit tool, but he looks like a solid 4th outfielder at least. Meyers/Melton might be a decent enough CF platoon.
