I recall the 18+ IP games the Astros used to get into in their early days, where they had great pitching and light hitting. I for one do not want to see them again. No one ever left a 6+ hour game, saying that was the best game ever, especially since they stop selling beer after the 7 inning The ghost runner allows the extra inning games to be over in less than three innings, which for a regular season games with families at the park is appreciated.
Having to throttle down to 75-80% effort should give MLB more offense (higher scoring) they seek as well.
I don't think it will help. Relievers will still do the same. Most starters do go around 100 pitches now. They average is lower due to bullpen days and the times players get early hooks.
...and undo+ everything they've done to make the games move faster. Batters are too good/athletic with too much info and training technology. You're not putting the genie back in the bottle. Enjoy your beer league softball scores.
UM...... The Chris Burke 18 inning playoff game is possibly the best game I have ever attended in my life although the Verlander Game 6 ALCS comes close.
Question... would you rather have Whitley or a healthy Graveman on the roster in September if there is space for only one?
All you stated has made the game better. Bet you still have hand cranked windows in your car and a Nokia phone too.
The game appeals to the ADHD generation. If you think it's better, then so be it. I tend to think we have lost something worthwhile and replaced it with a video game.
I can't believe the pitch clock still has haters. Baseball games never took more than 3 hours until the mid 90s. All the pitch clock did was move the game back closer to the pace it was played at for over a century. The reverence for 4 hour games and constant step offs is stupid. Baseball became a slog to watch, 4 hour games should never happen unless it goes to 13 innings.
