truly a unique skill LOL leads the league with 3P FGA for a players who can only make 1/3 of their 3P shot. No 2 is Jordan Poole.
The basis of haters and doubters center around their “efficiency” argument. TS% is a metric that measures points per possession which means it measures scoring efficiency not shooting efficiency as it includes FT’s in the formula: Points / [2 * (FGA + .44*FTA) ] The .44 means the guy who created this metric said 44% of FT ends the possession. The formula doesn’t count and 1s, Techs, clear paths, or 3 point FT’s as ending possessions. EFG% measures shooting efficiency (points per shot) valuing 3 pts 1.5x more. TS% simply rewards players who convert FGA to FT’s on possessions. That’s why guys like Luka or SGA get a boost in TS% It also rewards 3 pt shooting. (More points in less possessions) And guys like Curry and Conley benefit from this. Speaking of TS% here’s some stars TS their first 3 years: .542 Book .526 Fox .549 Jaylen Brown .544 Klay Thompson .542 Paul George .518 AI
he wastes too much three pt shots (1st in the league) for someone who can only make 1/3rd of their three pt shots
You need to use TS+ not TS if you want any value from the stat. Some of these guys played 10-20 years ago, it was a totally different game. Having a TS of 55% when league average is 50 is fantastic, having a TS% of 55 when league average is 60 is terrible.
Only 2 of those guys played 10-20 years ago. The rest have played in this era of 3 point ball. Green’s TS is low is because of 3 pt shooting and he didn’t get to the line as much last year. Meaning less points per possession. The point is TS isn’t a measure of shooting efficiency. Its about scoring efficiency (points per possession). And it shouldn’t be the only basis to evaluate a player.
This basically encompasses the Jalen Green experience, unfortunately. Please basketball gods give us a shooting efficiency leap this year.
Important to note: it's strange that Udoka was allowing Green to miss so many 3's until you look at the starting lineup. Sengun, Jabari, Brooks and FVV were all pretty maxed out in terms of the volume of 3's they could take on. I don't know that any of those guys could take on more attempts without tanking their efficiency. We didn't really have the option of reducing Green's 3PA once his role changed in a Sengun/FVV offense. Basically, someone has to take that kick out 3 or a better shot. I don't think we had the capacity to take that pressure off Jalen and I don't think Jalen was prepared for it. A big reason why there was such a surplus of 3's (vs drives) to take is because we're playing inside out with a crowded paint a lot of the time. Udoka has already stated a strong desire to move to a more pace and space system. I think we could relieve some pressure by replacing Brooks with a better shooter in the starting lineup. Hopefully Tari can be that guy. Sengun developing a passable 3PT shot would help this offense (and his career) explode.
Aside from the Jalen Saga, I am desperately hoping for Tari to make DB expendable. If he becomes a good enough shooter to keep Amen/Alperen in the game with him, my god.
This goes back to the discussion years ago about limiting Brooks shots in Memphis. Coaches don’t tell shooters to not shoot if that’s a part of their game that they have played most of their lives. Players that are shooters work on their shot and the coaching staff and off season trainers help them get there. Coaches try to instill confidence in players and they don’t want to limit players or affect their confidence by telling them to not shoot or put a limit. This can severely hinder a player. If a player has the shot he takes it. And part of Jalen’s game is dribble pullup threes or spot up threes when open. His game isn’t like Demar Derozan where shooting 3s isn’t what he prefers opting for 15 ft jumpers and dribble drive instead. That’s ok that’s what he is comfortable doing. Same with guys like Giddey. If Green shoots threes aa part of his arsenal then he just needs to continue doing it and get better. John Starks who shot .335 in 93-94 and inconsistently in that Finals was given the green light all season to shoot as he launched about 6 3s a game. Luka Doncic has shot about 8 threes per game his career and shot .327 or less his first 2 years and only .342 in 22-23. But he was and continues to be given the green light to shoot. It’s about continual growth and improvement of players and coaching instills confidence while helping them in this development.
You mean MVP's Giannis and Westbrook? Interesting sense of humour if you consider 2 of the greatest players ever as "jokes."
Ah yes the "TS is everything" crowd. They try and act like it's just relative but I'm still waiting for one of them to explain this: Reggie Miller 16th TS% - Another of Michael Jordan's b****es, no rings, averaged less than 20ppg for his career. Michael Jordan 131st TS% all time - the literal GOAT of the NBA. Michael Jordan 1st all time PPG Reggie Miller 124th all time PPG Luka Doncic 60th all time TS% Rudy Gobert 1st all time TS% Luka Doncic 3rd all time PPG Rudy Gobert doesn't make the top 250 players Yeah I know which statistic I'm putting more stock in when it comes to an alpha scorer. TS% is great for a secondary tier shooter or a center who can never reach the heights of the Jordans and Lukas as actual scorers. METRICS AINT ****.
Are you just a really dishonest person, or are you actually this dumb? At the peak of Jordan's career he was having 60%+ TS% seasons at a time the average TS% was like 54%.... that's the equivalent of having a 64%+ TS% today while leading the league in scoring AND playing all NBA caliber defense.
Those are the literal ranks of all time PPG and all time TS%. You're the one being dishonest here, b****.
So it's you being dumb then? Fair enough. Now do your best and think if maybe there's a reason we don't compare TS% across different eras and why MAYBE there's a reason why we don't compare TS% of centers to guards or wings. Was Carl Lewis terrible at track and field because his best numbers in every event would get easily beaten by multiple people in every event today? Since you are a Jalen cultist I already assume you aren't the best or brightest CF has to offer, but do your best to think about what I've just told you and see if you can become better. Good luck!
Let's examine some raw TS% vs raw PPG rankings. I'll let everybody else come up to their own conclusions on whether statistics or "metrics" are more accurate in player evaluation. Top 5 scoring centers of all time as per TS% 1.Rudy Gobert 2.DeAndre Jordan 3.Artis Gilmore 4.Nikola Jokic 5.Tyson Chandler Top 5 scoring centers of all time as per PPG 1.Wilt Chamberlain 2.Joel Embiid 3.Kareem Abdul Jabbar 4.Shaquille O'Neal 5.George Mikan Top 5 scoring SG's of all time as per TS% 1.Reggie Miller 2.James Harden (oh look, is THIS why y'all/Morey are so obsessed LOL?) 3.Brent Barry 4.Kyle Korver 5.JJ Redick Top 5 scoring SG's of all time as per PPG 1.Michael Jordan 2.Allen Iverson 3.George Gervin 4.Kobe Bryant 5.Devin Booker I mean, if y'all wanna claim TS% is the better indicator of who's a great scorer at a position, that's on y'all. I'll stick with real statistics myself. Hint: If you have to spin the raw data to fit your narrative (which you absolutely do) it's never as good as the raw statistics that show actual reality. Sorry b****es, Morey aint ****.
