You're right, and it's stupid.

If an infielder doesn't keep that glove down and whiffs entirely that's usually an error. Baseball just randomly decided arbitrary choices scorers make shouldn't be applied to outfielders when it comes to "routine" plays.

 

I do believe that the official scorer has the right to make that call if they deem it an error.
