I agree that a team must score runs. In order to be weak at any position, the rest of the lineup must be able to pick up that slack. And I agree that this team does not have enough bats to make up for a defense only CF (or SS or any position). But there are 2 specific things that make this a non-issue. 1) of 35 players in MLB who have had 250 PAs and play mostly CF, Jake is the 15th best hitter by OPS+/wRC+. Jake is not a weak hitter. He is not a bad hitter. He is a slightly below average MLB hitter who is a slightly above average hitter among CFers. 2) While we complain about how terrible Jake is with a bat, who would you rather have playing CF instead of him? Of the 13 men currently on the active roster, he is 7th in OPS+/wRC+. Since July 1st he is 9th. You have to start 9 guys, so in order to replace him you would have to play somebody with an even worse bat. Jake = 95 wRC+ / 45 since 7/1 Chas = 67 / 48 since 7/1 Dubon = 83 / 16 since 7/1 Cabbage = 68 / 3 since 7/1 Leon = -4 in only 10 PAs If Yordan plays LF then at least 2 of those guys must start. If he DHs then 3 must start. Which 2 or 3 are you playing ahead of Jake everyday?
Man we need Tucker back so badly....I can't take having Chas, Meyers, and Singleton/Dubon all in the lineup at the same time. Can we call up someone from the minors to give a try at 1b and RF? Seriously... throwing the same damn sht out there and hoping for some runs isn't working.
This roster has: Aledmys Diaz = -40 wRC+ /-100 wRC+ for Astros Pedro Leon = -4 wRC+ in 10 career PAs Chas McCormick = 67 wRC+ / 48 since 7/1 Trey Cabbage = 68 wRC+ / 3 since 7/1 Mauricio Dubon = 83 wRC+ / 16 since 7/1 Jon Singleton = 91 wRC+ / 75 since 7/1 Jake Meyers = 95 wRC+ / 45 since 7/1 3 of them must start everyday.
When a guy has back to back bases loaded 1 out and can't even hit the ball BOTH times that tells me he lacks the clutch gene. We see Meyers in a totally different light. He's below league avg in 3 of the 4 categories you listed. That makes him a below avg player and certainly not an everyday player on a championship team, regardless of what the analytics tell you.
Better to see something new and hopeful than the same sht they've been trouting out. What's the worst he can do? Strike out with bases loaded twice?
Dezenzo just got done beating up on the Rangers little brothers in Round Rock. Maybe he can go beat up on big brother now.
It's ridiculous to judge a player on 1 game. Yes, we see Meyers in completely different lights. I am looking at an entire picture. You are looking at a hitter. I see less than 15 CF in all of MLB who are better than him in 2024. I am looking at the other CFs in baseball. You are looking at him and not comparing him to others that could potentially replace him. And on what planet is Meyers below average in 3 of those 4 catagories? he is 90th percentile in baserunning value and 98th percentile in fielding. Which of those 2 do you think he is below average? As I have said multiple times - tell me who should be playing instead of him.
I mean, he'd better be a top 5% fielder as he runs too hot or too cold to be relied upon consistently on offense. Meyers has a place on this team but he's not irreplaceable...
Agreed but I hope they give him some time to know who he is at this level, I get so sick of the rotating of players and not letting them get comfortable and to get a decent sample size to be the everyday dude
For the record, I haven't complained about him, i've been one of his long time supporters Having said that, his numbers are proped up by an incredible (by his standards) May when he hit for a 924 OPS, outside of that one hot month his OPS is barely above 600 June 632 July 542 That's not average or just below average, that's awful For comparisons sake, Chas is so terrible that he can't get regular, much less everyday, playing time. And when he does many times if he goes 0-2 he is pinch hit for by the likes of Cabbage or Dubon June Meyers 632 OPS Chas 804 OPS July Meyers 542 OPS Chas 547 OPS Post All Star Break Meyers 456 OPS Chas 708 OPS I wanted Meyers to get his chance to be an every day guy and I got my wish. It certainly looks like I was wrong in what I wanted and thought would happen, the more he has played the worse he has been (at the plate)
Jesus Christ he has played 3 games Plus he had two days off then sat for 3 days, so went damn near a week without playing before getting his first at bat Hopefully Joe doesn't sit Dezenzo for a fkn week before giving him a shot
