Because the Jedi Mind Trick that the GOP has been able to pull on their voters for 30 years is that they're convinced they're somehow a majority of Americans who could be thriving if not for those pesky liberals. Their entire political identity requires feeling put-upon by cultural grievance while the party they vote for robs them of economic opportunity.
In more normal, peaceful times, perhaps a more conventional or traditional VP selection strategy would've made sense, and Shapiro might've been the best pick. (Also in more normal times, the VP choice doesn't matter much, as long as it's not a complete moron like Palin.) But these are NOT normal times. The left, particularly the younger progressive folks, has a growing anti-Israel sentiment and an antisemitism problem, and it's not exactly a fringe segment anymore. Shapiro is just too polarizing and thus politically risky in the current climate. Kamala made the right decision not to go with Shapiro. Besides, she doesn't need him to win PA. I don't know much about Walz, but it does seem that with him the Dems have a better shot of a clean sweep of Wisc/Mich/Penn. And I don't get much of a Tim Kaine vibe from him...Walz actually has a personality.

He's very pro Veteran and healthcare too. I love that. He's introduced many bills to help Veterans, and healthcare related issues.
While Walz is not a Jew, he has supported Israel consistently and has been critical of Hamas and supports a two state solution. While Shapiro is Jewish, and likely on a personal level has a closer allegiance with Israel - politically, Shapiro is more of a politician and his actual policy would likely be more supportive of Palestine because he has more of a desire to survive politically.
It is good to see that they all had their statements ready to go for the Walz choice. I would be curious to know what their negative comments would have been if Shapiro was the choice. Regardless - Tim Walz is not some leftist extremist like ... regardless of what right-wing extremists and Zionist extremists may say. As for liberal Jews - the conservative pundits sure like to do a lot of talking for them.
