I hope Crane and Co. learned their lesson over this. thats 95 million that we had to cut loose halfway into the contracts. Basically ate 45 million
He's eaten more than that on a fracking play last January Something tells me, don't know how or when, he just might get that money back X7
I think he just looks more for a certain kind of player. He doesn't seem to really like to acquire players who are just good, solid mlb quality players. He always wants someone who he sees huge upside in. Players like those three are likely to be solid the rest of the year (Edman health issues aside) But a guy like Cabbage, he could hit 40 HR if we can get him right Kikuchi has an ERA approaching 6 since the beginning of June, but he strikes out a lot of players so maybe we can unleash something in him others couldn't Ferguson has been a hot mess, the Yankees don't want him anywhere near the mound anymore as they try to make the playoffs. But he strikes out a lot of guys, so let's see if we can make him into a leverage guy again
So, Montero is really gone. When he came in as relief, I always knew the game was over. For the Astros.
Brown didn't have a backup plan when dealing with the Rays fell through is my point. We disagree that there were bats out there that would be upgrades besides the Tampa bats. Getting a SP with a 5.00 ERA and a RP off of the trash heap is nothing like what Luhnow or Click for that matter would've done. Very underwhelming, but predictable for a novice GM.
$30M in dead money next year for Abreu and Montero is a bummer, and it could be closer to $60M if McCullers and Javier don’t come back strong. Between those 4 deals and Pressly’s potential decline being on the books for $15M next season and Hader not being that great, Crane could be spending $95M in 2025 for <2 fwar of total production. Brutal. I suppose it could be worse if Verlander’s option had vested then he gotten hurt.
I agree that Crane having to eat all of that dead money sucks. I guess the half glass full outlook is that he’s willing to own it and allow the team to cut bait. I don’t think there are a lot of owners willing to do that. Hopefully this ends up being a lesson learned
Dana Brown said he's hoping Montero goes to Sugarland. So are they hoping they can get his confidence up and they plan on bringing him back??? Haven't gotten rid of him just yet lol. But if I'm Montero, I would refuse and take my monet and relax or hope for another team offers a contract.
Don't forget paying Michael Brantley 12 mil for 15 games last season. I love JV but even trading for him was dumb. Trading for Graveman who was barely mediocre was dumb. Just sooo many dumb decisions. Crane and Bagwell are too sentimental for their own.
this is, to a degree, not unexpected for a new GM. Every first time decision maker has their own ideas about undervalued players he can acquire and turn into gold. Luhnow made a lot of transactions in his early years but it was just different because the entire team stank. Click had a few deals that made me furrow my brow early on (e.g. Straw for Yainer/Maton). Brown is going to get better with experience.
