I mainly going back to the earlier point that with a more diligent offseason we wouldn't be in this kind of shape. It's a compounding annoyance.
Encourage them to sell rentals - sign stars young and try to keep them.... but there are lots of regulars that are not stars that can be traded.
Agreed - but the fact that the traditionally smart teams were in the same position as the Astros tells me it wasn't negligence.... now if this becomes a trend, then I will have a major issue with them.
If that last sentence is true, then it's even a larger indictment on Dana than the Kikuchi deal. Anyone with a working set of eyes could look at our farm system and know that we would likely not win any bidding wars for difference makers. If that was the strategy behind not pursuing free agents, then that is inexcusable.
Dipoto has only been there from 2015. Hes turned things around. That whole staff is under control and they will be competing for a while, longer than the rangers will.
Point taken. It ain't over until it's over. I just worry about the pitching and Espada in the playoffs.
Front office had to pay a big price for a negligent off-season. And this isn’t hindsight, their were plenty pleading them to sign a Lorenzen and/or Kirby Yates, etc. but they just stood pat. I stand by sentiment that Hader wasn’t necessary and we would’ve been better off spreading the money around to fill more pressing needs. But they chased the big, splashy name.
We are in first place in our division with Tucker and Garcia and Verlander waiting to join….maybe take a breath
Looking back... if anything we went too splashy with the Hader signing, there wasn't much that made logical sense if we assumed Verlander, Javier, Urquidy, Garcia would be healthy, and none of the firstbase options were decent. here's who was available with WAR in the previous season in parenthesis: CATCHERS Gary Sánchez (31 years old, 3.0 WAR) -- signed 1-year deal with MIL (Feb. 21) Mitch Garver (33, 2.4) -- signed 2-year deal with SEA (Dec. 28) Victor Caratini (30, 2.3) -- signed 2-year deal with HOU (Dec. 7) Tom Murphy (33, 1.3) -- signed 2-year deal with SF (Dec. 23) Roberto Pérez (35, 0.5) -- signed MiLB deal with BOS (Dec. 14) FIRST BASEMEN Rhys Hoskins (31 years old, 2.3 WAR) -- signed 2-year deal with MIL (Jan. 26) Carlos Santana (38, 2.7) -- signed 1-year deal with MIN (Feb. 7) Brandon Belt (36, 2.4) Donovan Solano (36, 1.8) -- signed MiLB deal with SD (April 17) Garrett Cooper (33, 1.6) -- signed MiLB deal with CHC (March 2) SECOND BASEMEN Elvis Andrus (35 years old, 4.6 WAR) -- signed MiLB deal with AZ (March 3) Whit Merrifield (35, 3.0) -- signed 1-year deal with PHI (Feb. 19) Tony Kemp (32, 1.5) -- signed 1-year deal with BAL (March 26) Kolten Wong (33, 1.5) -- signed MiLB deal with AZ (April 10) Adam Frazier (32, 1.3) -- signed 1-year deal with KC (Jan. 30) SHORTSTOPS Amed Rosario (28 years old, 2.9 WAR) -- signed 1-year deal with TB (Feb. 20) Brandon Crawford (37, 2.6) -- signed 1-year deal with STL (Feb. 27) Isiah Kiner-Falefa (29, 1.6) -- signed 2-year deal with TOR (Dec. 29) Tim Anderson (31, 1.5) -- signed 1-year deal with MIA (Feb. 24) José Iglesias (34, 1.0) -- signed MiLB deal with NYM (Dec. 5) THIRD BASEMEN Matt Chapman (31 years old, 7.6 WAR) -- signed 1-year deal with SF (March 3) Justin Turner (39, 3.6) -- signed 1-year deal with TOR (Jan. 30) Jeimer Candelario (30, 3.1) -- signed 3-year deal with CIN (Dec. 11) J.D. They could've signed Lorenzen and not signed Caratini and had money left over for trades. BTW, I like Caratini.
Fair, but I would have rather done Bloss, Loperfido, and others package for Yandy rather than Kikuchi. But maybe that wasn’t an option
Mariners fans have all been begging for this guy to be fired for awhile now. Look at the trades/signings he has made lately…they haven’t exactly worked out.
