Dana liked Blubaugh more than Bloss. They've got depth at 3B and the OF. Dezenzo, Leon, Melton, Baez. Cole,
I agree with your post, but I think Loperfido is an everyday CF. Dana valuedeon ahead of Loperfido. Let's hope he got this right. I'm bullish on Leon
yep... and then you have days like yesterday where you need Scott to go 3 and the back end of the bullpen looks lost (even Abreu threw way too many pitches against sub-par hitters). Also, why is Whitley still entering the conversation nearly every thread? Penn Murfee should be getting more love and anticipatory returns than Forrest ever should.
because he had TJ surgery and is in his late 20's... and is a relief pitcher. Still has better odds of contributing on the Astros than Whitely does.
Generally guys that have decent value don't get designated just because they have TJS, so I question your evaluation. By the way, he is 30 already, but you are right that he is a relief pitcher
They do if they're out of options and haven't signed any sort of multi-year contract. I'm sure if Dana hadn't had the Atlanta connections, he would have slipped through and been allowed to rehab with the Braves. Sorry, he turned 30 2 months ago... i'll update my rolodex and make sure to send him a birthday card!
Wasn't sure. He came in as their 5th highest position propsect to the year I think- if that gives any idea of how stacked that system is, and they certainly have enough young guys and other guys that maybe he's blocked or something. I'd have made a call to talk to them as they seem to be getting ready to ship some serious talent out.
I'm excited to see him up too. Whitley is entering the conversation b/c @Buck Turgidson wants to marry him (or see him promoted to the bigs I forget exactly which one he said) and I just want Buck to be happy.
That is the potential silver lining. It would be just about the only saving grace here. If they could lock him up on a reasonable team friendly deal, you'd at least be getting something for your serious overpay.
Meh, it depends on how you value prospects. Liranzo is a mlb top 50 caliber prospect. Houston did not have a prospect of his caliber. Bloss and Loperfido were on par with fringe Top 100 prospects. Sweeney and Wagner are pretty equivalent. So is Bloss and Loperfido worth more than Liranzo? Hard to say. I’d say both teams got bad value.
Also, the Dodgers had the luxury of sweating the Tigers. The Astros had no such luxury. Los Angeles is a better team, they have an easier path to the postseason, and they have a much better and deeper system. They could limp along through August, get their players healthy, and be ready to go September 1. So trading for a starting pitcher was a luxury. The Astros are in a fight for their playoff lives. They did not have time to wait to see if a 41-year-old can stay healthy and another picture can bounce back from Tommy John surgery. The Astros were desperate; the Dodgers were not. That handed all the leverage to Toronto.
Is our minor league system so terrible that who we consider good prospects are thought scrubs by the rest of the league?
