Nowadays, I'm more worried when a signing or trade is "universally loved" (sorta like Abreu's was) vs. universally hated (in recent years - MDA picked to coach the rockets).
This is only tangentially related - but I hope at this point fans realize that they should not take anything Brown says too seriously when it comes to a particular prospect. He talked up Drew Gilbert and Jake Bloss - and now both have been traded, and both were traded so that Brown could protect other prospects. The real opinion on Gilbert came out after the Verlander deal - when Brown said that he wasn't good enough defensively to stay in center, did not hit for enough power to stand out as a corner outfielder and had injury issues .......... so far all of those have proven to be true. Magically, the 24 year old Gilbert has moved up into the top 50 prospects in the game after leaving Houston, but Gilbert has an OPS of under 600 in the little he has played this year. As for Bloss - he quickly moved up the system based on merit, where he was dominant through AA. They called him up after massive injuries to their starting rotation and he never even pitched in AAA. His velocity went down in the big leagues and he seemed to lack a real out pitch. Next thing we know, he is dealt.... lets wait and see what Brown has to say about him.
The timeline to truly judge GMs is far longer than fans have the patience for. It is 5 and sometimes 10 years before a GM’s moves have fully played out. It will almost certainly be 3-4 years before there is a final verdict on Bloss and Loperfido. Of course, we will know what Houston got out of this deal in 3 months.
Orioles get Trevor Rogers for Connor Norby. I feel like Norby would be the equivalent of Pedro Leon in Houston’s system.
Trevor Rogers has not been good and they got two of the O's better prospects. Good return for the Marlins.
Possibly but a few days ago, The Athletic had a article stating relief pitchers were just as expensive as what the starters will go for.
Apparently Dana liked Blubaugh more than Bloss. I respect that Dana is willing to keep Click's guy over his own. A lot of GM's wouldn't trade his guys in this scenario. I know this is a beat up on Dana day, but I'm keeping an open mind and hope I'm wrong.
Depends on who is doing the rating. The only rating that matters to me is my rating. Loperfido is a much better prospect (my rating) than Cole ever will be. I am certain there was little if any interest in Cole or Gordon. Bluebaugh is at least arguably in the same conversation as Bloss but there is a reason Bloss passed him so easily and it had nothing to do with caginess on Brown's part.
Who will be the best prospects in 2025? Because none of these guys you mentioned were “household” names in 2023. I look forward to your ratings… because that’s all that ever matters, your ratings!
I think I understand Dana now. He’s going to offer Framber up for a trade. I wonder what kind of return he would get now?
