It doesn't matter what Dana does. If he makes a move, he's a screwup. If he doesn't make a move, he's a screwup. No matter what he's screwed up!
I am not sure what to think about Bloss. Who knows what the Astros think about him. And I am pretty much out on Loperfido - the strikeout rate is crazy high and he doesn't hit enough home runs or walk enough to justify it. I am actually most stung by losing Wagner. I think he's better than Dubon, and having 5+ years of Dubon+ as a utility bat was really appealing to me. I think his bat plays for sure.
Are you actually suggesting Loperfido and his .567 OPS and 35% K rate since his return was a key component of this recent run? He has made nice plays in the field - but the Astros don't really lack good defensive OFers: Dubon, Meyers and Chas all play + defense. I think it's silly to suggest Loperfido moved any needles the past ~6 weeks.
I mean... we were very obviously desperate for a starting pitcher - I don't know if that constitutes a panic? You could argue Kikuchi is the best SP dealt so far. Eflin is maybe better and he also cost three prospects from a much better system. We've been told this was a seller's market, and this deal bears that out. I read somewhere (Ben Verlander, I think?) who said the Astros were talking to Detroit and the asking price for Flaherty was too high. It'll be interesting to see what teams can get for SPs today, if any are traded.
Not sure who said it but yeah Houston was talking to Detroit about Flaherty but moved on when it was too high. Also no idea if those locked on Astros people have sources but they said everytime they thought a deal was close, Detroit kept asking for more. Watch Detroit panic and NY or LA will get a steal. Or at least less than Kikuchi lol
I'm pretty sure it was Ben Verlander, who likely has sources in both organizations, given his brother's career.
Exactly we have a lot of major league GM’s in this thread that don’t actually GM anything. Right now it looks bad but if we make another deep run and this pitcher is a big part of it then it’s a win. Those prospects were not going to help right away. Joey had success on the defensive side but the bat just wasn’t consistent
The criticism’s of last night’s trade go way beyond this forum. The trade is being called an overpay widely across MLB sources beyond the Astros organization.
Overpaying for a rental almost becomes a self fulfilling prophecy of “we have to make the most of this season”. You overpay for a player who is a pending free agent, and give up players who had good long term outlooks, which increases pressure to win it all this season…rinse and repeat.
Trading Teoscar Hernandez for Francisco Liriano resulted in a WS win, it was still a terrible trade. I see the same cope now from Rangers fans with the Chapman trade.
You can NOT be a **** up and make good trades. Dana would have been roasted for no trades, for sure. But make a good trade maybe? Too much to ask I guess? Lol.
It wasn't a good trade, and it was made by the guy everyone would throw Brown aside to bring back in a heartbeat because we've all decided he never made a mistake. Also, Kikuchi > Liriano.
Dana and the front office can gain a lot of good will back with the fanbase if they can pull off Yandy Diaz (assuming they don't give up a kings ransom).
What have you seen from the current regime that makes you think they won't be giving up a king's ransom for anyone?!
Exactly. I'll reserve judgment until the deadline passes, but this move by itself does basically nothing and cost way too much. He needs to do more or this was a complete waste of time.
I just realized how much of a genius Dana Brown may be. The price of players may have just went way up due to the Astros, causing the Yankees to overspend dearly if they want to make a move
