Hey everyone, I had Chris Gorman and Evan Vaden on my show to do an hour on the Houston Rockets. Really fun to get to talk solely about the team I love, so I hope yall enjoy listening to this episode as much as enjoyed recording it.
Just to express them level of junk analysis here. They think Tari is more valuable than guys like Jalen or Sengun because of "advanced stats". Really.lazg analysis here. Doesn't account for things like roles each player has.
With guys like Barkley they sell themselves as entertainers not analysts. Everyone goes into those half time shows expecting laughs not analysis.
I absolutely think there is an argument that for a championship level team, Tari could be more valuable. Sengun’s defense might hold up come postseason, but there is no guarantee of it. Jalen gets pulled from 4th quarters, sometimes for Tari. There is no question that Tari can play an important role for a championship level team. It may not be as big of a role as someone like Jalen or Sengun would play if things go right in their development (in the case of Green) or ability to translate play to postseason (for Sengun). Do they have higher upsides? Yes. Is there a chance they aren’t championship level players in prominent roles? Yes.
This is more of a bigotry of lower expectations. Tari doesn't need to hit as a primary offensive option to be a part of a team.
If your goal is to win a championship, you would rather have kcp on your team then sabonis 100 times out of 100. It all depends on your goals
This is a very simplistic way of forming a championship team. The Tari Easons of the world are irrelevant for a championship contender without the baseline offensive engine. You don't win a ring with just a team full of Lou Dorts or Taris. You need the underlying elite offensive talent first and foremost.
Sure, but sabonis (just as an example) has zero value to a team trying to win a title. He has a lot of value to a team trying to win 45 games, but not to a team that wants to compete.
Because the teams that are trying to win a title already accomplished the hardest part about building a title contender which is finding the offensive engine that will carry them whether it be a singular guy like Luka or Lebron or a dynamic duo with what the Rockets are hoping with Sengun and Jalen
Tari impacts winning more than Jabari up to now, at least when he can stay on the floor. Jabari seems to have a higher ceiling, though, with his size and shooting ability. It wouldn't totally surprise me if Tari took a lot of Jabari's minutes this year if he doesn't continue to progress.
Totally disagree with this hot take. With Fox and Keegan, sure. But you add Sabonis to JJJ, Bane and Ja, for instance, and you can beat anyone.
You can have 3 and an Aaron Gordon as the 4th, for instance. If the Kings had Fox/Sabonis, and say, Kevin Durant, I bet they would be legitimate contenders.
I don’t disagree that finding someone that can be the offensive engine is the most difficult part. My point is that with Jalen we don’t know if he will be that, and after last season I think even the Rockets view it as less than likely he becomes that. If they did view him that way, I think there would be a lot less hesitancy giving him a max. Sure there is also the reason of keeping salary cap open next summer to not give out maxes to him and Sengun yet, but I think if they really were 100% confident that either one was a championship caliber offensive engine (or perhaps in Sengun’s case, worries about defense), then they would just go ahead and give them the max. Is Tari as valuable as a championship caliber offensive engine? Of course not. But as of now, we don’t have a sure-fire one. We do have a sure-fire championship caliber glue guy imo though.

I mean I think it's a lot easier to be closer to realizing your potential as a high level role player than being certain you are the main centerpiece of a championship level offense. Obviously for Jalen it's a less certain thing. The Rockets haven't figured out the hardest part of building a championship roster yet. Finding the high level role players is a rather moot point. Ya it's uncertain if Jalen is that. Doesn't mean Tari is a better player.
Wow not sure people can comment on value of players when Sabonis is supposedly not a player that has value, wins you a title or is not as valuable to a contender as KCP is. Talk about ignorance and simplistic reasoning. Context and the collective of individuals matter. So to one team a Green has more value and to another a Sengun or Tari or whoever.
Now see we may be finding some common ground here lol. I don’t agree that finding high level role players is a moot point, but I do agree that it’s easier to reach the potential of an awesome role player than an awesome offensive engine. Also I didn’t use the term “better” for a reason. More valuable has a different definition than better in this situation imo.
Im not sure I agree with the KCP over Sabonis comparison, but I do agree with the premise that some players have more value in certain contexts than others.
