I honestly have not been overwhelmed or moved by a single player being traded thus far. Even Paredes’ value is more in his club controlled years, not necessarily his potential for stardom. There is not that future cy young or future MVP award winner being mentioned right now. I guess JV wasn’t technically being mentioned back in 2017 either (neither was Jazz before yesterday)… so still possible that a move is made for somebody not being leaked or on everybody’s radar.’ Ultimately, those are the type of moves you truly leverage the farm for. Everything else can probably be obtained at any point…. But also be second guessed not that far down the road when the traded for player declines and the prospects start to show promise…
That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying he sounded whipped and defeated and then right afterwards the deal, that we wanted badly, was announced. It was a bad look and bad optics, not cause and effect.
He's got 24 hours until this is my working theory on him. I already said he will probably grow into a top 10 GM and he's probably the right guy with his draft and develop talent for us right now, so I'm not displeased.
I'm sure in the moment he was that way because he fought and lost out on that player. The fact that was made public 10 minutes later means he knew before the interview. Would his impression have been different if it was 10 minutes after it was announced? He's human and these negotiations are crazy fast moving and stressful from what I see. Let's see how he appears next time we see/hear him. I'm betting it's after a big trade and he is 180 degrees different.
Or it had nothing to do with that move at all? Hell, the only thing ever leaked about Paredes prior to the Cubs announcement was that it was a bidding war between the Dodgers and Yankees. Maybe the Astros were never really that far into it. Or he could leak that they were on the 2 yard line.
Future CY young category (I'm going to consider anyone top 5 in this category as belonging) being mentioned- Skubal, Crochet, Snell, Flaherty will get some votes this year if he finishes up well but he's not that guy MVP tier possibilities (this is guys that I think will be possible to have 6 war type seasons in them: Rooker, Vlad Jr., Robert Jr., Paredes (if he could stick at 3rd and played half his games in the crawford boxes you could see him eke out a 6 war season- hes's still young, Guys that would have easily filled holes and made us a lot better- Arrozarena, Winker, Yandy Diaz, Cody Bellinger (wtf knws what the cubs are doing), Matt Chapman (move Bregman to 1st), Eflin, Fredde, Bassitt, Gausman, That's the list of guys that could get moved, been mentioned to be moved or available or on the block that the Astros could/should try to upgrade with. If we get any 3 names from that list I will be pretty happy. I'm not messing with RP but if you want one thrown in, sure. It's certainly possible that the only guys from the first two tiers that get moved are Flaherty and Paredes.
I saw like 10 different people saying the Astros were in on Paredes. Now- with the way that works is it possible that was just 10 different people wo talked to @Nook ;-) ? Sure. Could be. But we have been a name as mentioned as in on almost everyone and Dana said he was going big game hunting and if that didn't work out he'd settle for mid tier guys (that has to translate to above average to fringe all star the way he was talking). Again, Dana says. Yeah yeah yeah- you are right that I shouldn't ever listen to him and he probably shouldn't ever speak.
Thanks for re-asserting my point… and would rather not consider players like Skubal or Vlad Jr that people were skeptical if they’d even be moved to begin with (until they’re actually traded). Same goes for Gausman. I haven’t been overwhelmed with anybody who’s been traded thus far.
Can’t give you anymore Xanax’s… because that would likely require you to go to the ER (presuming you’re around people who could recognize the lack of response or breathing)…. They didn’t get him. Nor did any other AL contenders with similar needs (and likely deeper farms). Maybe the Rays had a say in where he goes as well…
I spend 5 figures on season tickets- run a podcast, post on 3 different message boards and dream about the Astros... you think I'm above reading the body language and mannerisms of our GM 2 days before the trade deadline with all the earnestness that a cold war era Kremlinologist would bring to analzying politboro pictures back in the day?
You don't do a move just for the sake of making one. Having said that, these guys aren't good enough "as is" if you're trying to win it all again. I still expect something to happen, and while I'll be disappointed if they stand pat, I don't really want them to get fleeced either.
Also my wife and youngest are on a cruise and my son is at church camp. It's me and the 13 year old and she's grunted at me 3 times and said 8 words since they all took off. I can't even imagine how bad the stench from my decomposing body would have to be before she would notice that something is wrong with dad.
Here comes a Huff for Zobrist-type move! (In all seriousness, Huff’s production that year would be a major get, lol).
Snell won the CY Young award last year and has the ability to do it again. You don't need MVP level players to finish out a team that can win a championship. You need a SP2-3 and an avg to slightly above avg bat. This should be doable without wrecking the farm system, although any trade that gets you close to a championship should hurt. I mean if say Melton, Blubaugh, Cole, Leon and Ullola were traded to fill these needs would that be your definition of trading away the farm?
