If Houston made that trade they could then flip McCormick for a RP. I can’t envision a contending team trading away a player playing like one of the 10 best in the league at his position; I will be extremely surprised if Meyers gets moved.
I agree it's not likely to happen, but in order to improve at the deadline with a weak (or perceived/accepted as weak) system and not diminish it further, Dana will need to think outside the box. I think Jake is wasted in a corner spot. Can Robert play a corner? If not they end up w/ 2 guys who can really only play CF.
“Try go to big and see if there’s a deal that makes sense for the organization,” Brown said of his efforts to add a starter. “If that don’t work, we’ll go down to mid-level and hopefully we can land something there. But it doesn’t hurt to ask. When you go through this, ask and thou shall receive sometimes. We want to try to go big, and if we can’t get the big thing done, we’ll try to go mid-level so we can get through this.” Brown went on to note that with Luis Garcia and Justin Verlander both on the mend, bringing in a potential deadline acquisition to further bolster the rotation would allow the Astros to work from a six-man rotation “at times” down the stretch. “If we can get a mid-level guy and we get Garcia and Verlander back,” said Brown later in that same radio appearance, “that would be massive to this club.”
I've been hesitant on Robert because of a few things. One he's broken right now and thus is he worth the investment to acquire? Not just the players we'd have to package but also the financial part of it as well. I just checked his contract, and I was surprised at what I saw. His luxury tax hit for '25 is only 8.3 million. It jumps up to 20 mil in both '26 + '27, however both of those yrs are club options. I believe there was 2 mil buyout. After the '27 season he's a FA. So definitely not as bad as I thought. Does a change of scenery help him? Can the analytic nerds help him?
Broken isn't really the right word but pretty much all of his #s are down compared to last yr (SLG, OBP, OPS, Avg) and he's striking out 33% of the time. For a team that has always put a premium on making contact that's a pretty high rate.
Meyers had a very hot stretch the first three weeks of May. Since May 25, his OPS is .596. He's an elite glove playing a premium position so, theoretically - like Maldonado - they could sacrifice his bat for his glove. But they would have to upgrade at 1B and LF/DH or we'll run into some of the same problems we saw last year - namely that our line-up isn't long enough to overcome weak bats, slumps, injuries, etc.
Then Parades 1b. And Decenzo, Matthews battle er out for 3b and Dubon and Aledyms Diaz reserves. What if we score TB Diaz too! Diaz Catcher, Diaz 1b and A Diaz reserve! And also get the 3 Y's. Yandy Yordan Yanier! So exciting I cannot wait!
Why? As currently constructed the Astros are the best team in the AL. By far. We could trade for Robert or we could wait a few more days for Tucker to return. Tucker is far superior to Robert and costs nothing. We can keep our prospects and our cash and improve the best team in the league by not doing that trade. Trading for Fedde to take a few innings now does nothing to improve the teams rotation in the Fall. Utilizing Ullola and Bluebaugh to take those innings now solves the same problem and adds to the potential near term and long term future of the rotation.
There is no world where this deal does not improve the Astros chances to win in 2024. How in the world does Tucker returning impact this deal at all? Ridiculous argument.
Peredes makes the most sense of anyone we've seen being possibly available . . . at least to keep a window open. Gives us a year or two to figure out Matthews and Dezenzo. I'm not loving the idea of being forced into a rookie at third (NEXT year). or we resign bregman and gives us some flexibility at 2nd and 1st base. Win win.
