http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/articles/2004/09/26/will_he_magically_reappear/ This 'note' from Boston Globe: And...there is the irrepressible Pepe Sanchez, the point guard from the gold medal-winning Argentina team who, inexplicably, can't get an NBA job. I ran the idea of Sanchez by Houston Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy last week. "Watching him play in the Olympics, I said to myself, `That guy has gotten a lot better,' " Van Gundy said. "You win on the perimeter in that kind of basketball, and he's a terrific point guard for them." Van Gundy's point guards as of now are Tyronn Lue and Charlie Ward, because Bobby Sura is out for maybe three months with a bad back. Think Pepe couldn't help out? . . .
It looks as though Pepe is one of those foreign players that had a wake-up call once he joined the NBA! He's not at the same level as Arroyos or Lopez. Those guys can come in and give you good production. Pepe needed to get stronger and learn the NBA game. JVG said that he's gotten better so you never know. Not sure what from JVG said, if he's interested. Sura was proven. Pepe is not. Even though both of them are 6'4" - 6'5" hybrid-guards. Not sure JVG is convinced he can handle the defensive assignments, much less the NBA offensive schemes. In two years, with limited minutes...not even 1ppg. http://www.nba.com/playerfile/pepe_sanchez/?nav=page Only JVG can decide for a tryout. You never know.
Pepe Sanchez played 4 years at Temple and has been in the NBA for a bit (with Philadelphia for a while). I was never all the impressed with him.
Although his minutes were very limited, the production mimics what he did at Temple in terms of assists, assist/turnover, steals, rebounds. At Temple he anchored the transition defense. Sanchez has never been able to shoot and or create in the NBA. I am not sure how fast he is on court defensively. I do believe he has been able to improve his shooting. I do believe he is an NBA passer and ballhandler. I do think he would be worth a try, mainly because McGrady/Yao and not the PG will be dominating the ball.
He played for Detroit two years ago. Was a good passer/creator, but was totally exposed for his lack of any individual offensive game. He didn't play a lot, but he went the entire season without hitting one shot. Not a one. I'm sure there's someplace in the NBA where he could fit in, but he's not exactly a guy you make room for. I think he lacks the shooting skills that are necessary playing off of Yao.
