Kevin Pelton has been high of Sheppard for a while. He did a Lowe Post a while back where he was talking about him and Pelton thought he projected well into the NBA. I specifically remember him making the point that getting steals is vastly underrated nowadays and that's what puts Reed over the top.
Reed’s handles are actually the weakest part of his game that I’ve seen. And I’m certain he won’t be a mvp candidate at 22. It’s more of a stylistic comp.
The only way they trade FVV is if the deal is a total steal for us or if we are absolutely trash record wise.
He definitely needs to work on his handles. There were times where he lost the ball for a moment like during a fast break in yesterday's game. He also needs to put more zip into his passes. He threw a couple of ducks that would be stolen in the NBA. Not trying to nitpick, but he is definitely not close to being a polished player (as with all young players.) With that being said, he definitely has more game to him than what was shown at Kentucky.
How good is Reed? I'll get into an Air duct like the Colombians to watch him play! About his handles, they're going to get better. For now, it works for him. His dribbling is still very effective even if his handles do look like Bob Cousy in black and white film. That one cross over he shifted Sarr 5 ft to the right while he continued left. Sarr who is supposed to be another defensive big that can cover everything, land and sea.
Something I noticed watching the Washington game last night. Reed uses his smaller size to sneak into the passing lanes. Listening to media comment on his smaller size I feel like he will make it work for him. He's that damn smart. The steal numbers are real and I think when he's playing among the really tall trees they're only going to get better.
It's the Grand Theft Alvarado and Muggsy Bogues special. Small players are often great at steals. Stockton is the all-time steals leader. CP3 has led the league in steals five times. Iverson three times. These guys are all only 6'0" tops.
Huh? Jabari was drafted exactly because of his elite 3pt shooting for a big....this is just not accurate for Jabari at least.
I will say that Reed needs to get stronger and tougher as a perimeter defender. As good as he is at poking at the ball, he lets his man pass him too easily. He needs to be put his body out there and offer at least some physical resistance to slow them down.
Depends very much on where "the end of the play" is on the court. If it's at the rim, Reed may have a hard time converting against tall athletic NBA rim defenders, if it's outside of 10ft from the rim, Amen and Sengun may have a harder time converting because neither has a very consistent jump shot(although Sengun's is obviously not quite as limited as Amen's jumper because at least he has that push shot for some middies).
All true, but also normal. Smaller guys have a harder time at the rim, big guys are normally not the best 3-point shooters.
Yes, but the offensive playmaking is clearly what's separating the two as prospects. As evidenced by how much Giovony gushed about CP3 in this regards as his draft profile. Can Sheppard reach that level? Who knows. But in his summer league games that is clearly where his weaknesses lie. In the end until he actually shows it, I'm not going to assume it. I've been assuming both Sengun and Green would improve their 3 point shooting these past years and neither has done it. So I'm not taking development for granted.
His feel for the game is special. He handles the ball at more than an acceptable level He plays smart defense and plays defense at an acceptable level. He has the ability to become a young Chris Paul IMHO.
Of course not. Jalen Green is a SCORER and Reed Sheppard is a SHOOTER. Jalen Green was not touted as a defender similar to Reed Sheppard. All you need to do is look at the makeup of both summer league teams and apply a little context.
Assumptions and overinflated egos have a tendency of imploding around here. We'll remember to kick around this topic as the season progresses.
