I know chicks dig the longball and whatnot, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with gap power, doubles power
It’s at a point of being under appreciated now - the game right now needs guys that hit for average and hit the gaps. Brown knows what he is doing, but I hope they focus on having him just make solid contact - he can hit 8-10 homers a year if he hits 300
That's one of the things I used to love about Bregman: he would kill the ball to the RCF gap with regularity and he hit line drives everywhere. This is just me b.s'ing, but I think getting homer-happy (post '19) has led to pop-up Bregman.
The crux of Moneyball/Luhnowball: if gap to gap hitting, bunting, and proper baserunning are undervalued...let's bring some of that s!!t back
Cause he was the BPA on the Astros board. And you always go BPA in the draft. Who knows what the Astros will look like 3-5 seasons from now when he’s ready for a call up.
Not that this had anything to do with the pick, but catcher is probably the weakest position in Houston’s farm (along with 1B).
Catching is one of the hardest positions to fill as we've seen over most of our history. Definitely happy with the pick. Was hoping Cam Caminiti would keep falling, but not enough luck there.
Janek, Matthews, and Melton could be a solid trio of up-the-middle players coming up in the next 2-3 years.
IIRC, Korey Lee was mostly an offensive catcher who had one gigantic break-out season before the draft. Janek appears to be the best defensive catcher in this draft class, plus he's a good offensive player. Seems like Janek is a much better prospect than Lee.
Guys I like in rounds 3-10 who are still available: OF Dakota Jordan 2B Peyton Stovall P Tyson Neighbors OF Terrence Kiel II SS Jay Abernathy SS Zander Darby 2B Duce Gourson SS Owen Paino 1B Corey Collins P Greysen Carter
Why did we not have a 2nd round pick? We trade it or did mlb decide we are too good they gotta subtract from us let all the other teams catch up.
FB up to 97, throws a slider, good delivery. High ceiling, injury/durability issues, but looks like he’d be good out of the bullpen if starting doesn’t work out.
I would put them in the same class of prospect draft wise. The draft that Lee went in was considered a lot better than this one. As for Lee - he was more than just an offensive catcher. His arm graded out at 70 behind the plate and his receiving skills were about the same as Janek's. Lee was not good at blocking balls, but his build was considered solid to be a receiver. As for Janek, he is a better athlete behind the dish than Lee. His arm strength is not as good, and his framing is about the same. Both had high marks for leadership. Offensively they are similar leaving college - both have made efforts to maximize power. I think that Lee has more power, but Janek has better feel as a hitter. Both were considered to have plus bat speed leaving college. As far as breaking out - Janek and Lee both had solid sophomore seasons and then great junior seasons. Lee is a little bigger if I remember right, and Janek is the better athlete. I am happy with the pick if Brown and his staff are - and I think that there is a way for Janek to become a very valuable big leaguer, but from a relative value standpoint at the time of the draft, I think they are in the same tier.
