There was this one pass he had tonight reminded me much of a Chris Paul oop had me like whoaa... Overall his feel for the game is much more advanced than some of our players. And yes I know one summer league game isn't gonna tell me anything, but I clearly see how the FO wanted him and everything else that came was smoke and mirrors. A consistent shooting mechanics is hard not to replicate in efficiency... I expect him to be one of the elite shooters in the game.
It seemed to me that Udoka was trying to give the ball to Alperen, especially when it was a big game at a big moment. A rather odd way to treat Steven Adam's backup...
I only made it through the 1st 5 pages of this thread, but wow are there some amazing hot takes. I will not name names.
Shooting is legit and he actually looks a lot bigger on the court than I expected. I don’t think size is an issue. Court awareness is obvious. It’s funny but when the bbs is almost universally on board a pick then the tone of a thread is quite different. Reed is about to get the Tari and Cam treatment.
Sheppard’s bbiq is what sets him apart from the rest of our rookies other than Sengun. He can’t get all the way to the rim like Jalen, but his midrange and 3 pointer is automatic. His defense will be decent. Pick and roll with Alpi will be unstoppable. I know it’s summer league, but that shooting and bbiq is nba ready. We hit it out of the ballpark with this guy and I was skeptical up to the draft. I expect he will have to earn it with Ime and start to get significant minutes leading up to the all-star break.
The entire season was literally devoted to Sengun on the offensive end, and these people think Ime doesn't like Alpi? It's insanity, if anything I'd say Alpi looks like the youngster we have who Ime had the most confidence/liked the most last season. I see no reason that would change in the off-season. All of these onlyfans wars are going to look so stupid when the season starts and the Sengun/Jalen 2 man game starts dominating tbh.
Between Ime’s coaching and FVV’s mentorship, Reed has landed in his best possible spot. He will soak up defense and fundamentals while earning time with his shooting.
That's precisely the evolution we need to see. More Fred standing in the corner knocking down threes while JG and Alperen run the show...
I agree wholeheartedly, with FVV eventually transitioning to Reed standing wherever the **** he wants and knocking down 3's whilst Jalen and Alpi run the show. It's FVV who slows everything down to a crawl, Reed seems more athletic by the eye test and is a clear upgrade as a shooter. Jalen's way more effective as the guy with the ball in his hands than the guy forcing a 3 at the end of the shot clock, and the offense would be a LOT faster if it's Jalen coming off the Alpi screen than FVV's slow ass meandering back and forth in the lane hoping for contact or waiting for Alpi to make something happen. Regardless of whether it's Jalen, Amen or Cam on the court (any 2 of those players and we're already one of the most athletic lineups in the league) we can push the break and weaponize our biggest roster strength - Alpi's always been an incredible playmaker, and then in the half court do a faster version of what we did last season and maybe get a defense to actually have to rotate/collapse because it's Jalen flying through the lane with Sengun and not FVV casually strolling. Once that pace comes where we can get the defense chasing then those same Boston-style perimeter passes are going to end with either Reed or Jabari more often than not...I think it's pretty clearly a sound strategy with our talentpool...
Exactly. Gotta find the balance of fast and slow like the old showtime Lakers with Magic and Kareem. I think Amen and Tari in particular, and Reed, will help Jalen this year with all the deflections they get. Easy buckets to get him going.
I'm with you in that I want to see that Jalen/ Sengun two-man game. If you can pair that action with RS coming off a staggered two-man screen on the backside of that play, I think you really have something. The D will be very afraid to leave Sheppard alone and they won't be able to help as easily on Jalen/Sengun. Such plays will mean that guys like Jabari and Brooks will need to be involved in setting screens for Sheppard and that has never been part of their games. But we have a dead-eye shooter, and Jabari and Brooks love the dirty work. It should be an easy sell/adjustment There is no reason to park Sheppard in the corner or on the opposite wing. Give him the freedom to move, look for his shot, and organize other guys for their looks.
if Jalen can hit that little midrange shot this would be the ideal half court set. Otherwise, they just roll with Sengun and clog the passing lanes. Green should be the main ball handler in the half court and I believe that is what Ime wants. If Jalen can improve in that aspect of the game it will open up the court for everyone and he doesn’t have to become an elite three point shooter.
He will never be as athletic as the true stars, but he a star level skill set. He was the clear pick.
I was and have been someone who has doubted him being the pick at 3, but I’ll admit I liked what I saw last night. The BBIQ, shooting, and feel for the game is going to translate at any level. It’s really just a matter of whether the physicality at the next level will render him ineffective as a creator or not. I say that not mean that he will be ineffective, but ineffective as a creator and not a spot shooter. There have been others with the same limitations such as FVV, and prior with Stockton, Nash, CP3 etc. that are somewhere between effective and all time greats with the same physical limitations. The big key is the passing, and court vision that separates a Steve Nash from a Steve Kerr. I very much would prefer Reed to be a Steve Nash and ultimately take over for FVV for the foreseeable future but I’ll still be more than happy to see him be this teams version of a Steve Kerr knowing that we still have guys with all star potential for him to bring a ton of value to the team in that role. The guy has the skills obviously. Looking forward to see him take control of the game the rest of the summer league and then really looking forward to him going up against bigger and better players in the NBA. Cooking against Bronny James is way different than cooking against Anthony Edwards.
Cam was one of the worst players jn the league finishing through contact. The numbers are there. His IQ is also questionable sometimes. I wonder why you put him there
His hands on defense were the most impressive thing to me. He was getting blown by quite a bit but was able to recover because of how he could get his hands on the ball. Very FVV-like. Shooting was definitely as good as advertised but the finishes inside the arc leave a bit to be desired. He'll learn a lot from FVV this season.
