I agree with you. It seems to me, if anything those that are younger and closer to Biden seem sad or concerned - they largely see him as a good man that believes in what he pursues and has accomplishments but are having to accept that he isn't just old - he is very old, and his body is betraying him. They are having to accept that he is fading, that he likely will not win and there are VERY sincere and fair concerns over an 84–85-year-old in the Whitehouse. Some of it is genuine self-serving (they remain in power and influence if he wins), some of it appears to be that that genuinely believe in Biden and some of it appears to be that they are surprised by the response, because they see him every day and are used to it. All of that is touching - but at the end of the day, the American people should be irate at their two political parties - in what possible universe is a reality television star that has a string of failed businesses and is a convicted felon nearing 80 years old the best for half of America and the other candidate is so old and neurologically compromised that they limit his interactions with the public and constantly worry he won't make it through a press conference... these guys would be voted off of corporate boards... but they are leading this nation.
I don't trust for a minute the sincerity of conservative posters here re: Biden's age. They've been wish casting for an Alzheimer's diagnosis since 2019.
I think that the response is mixed. I have seen a lot of meme's and responses on twitter and other places making fun of him for it. I do agree with you though that more moderate and/or long term political animals have expressed surprise or concern and it is genuine. I also am not surprised Biden doesn't want to step down - the time for those around him to address this was when it came time to discuss a second term. Also - guys that run for President and are successful are very ambitious, they don't want to lose and they are used to being in power and like being President..... which is why what Washington did is so incredibly under appreciated, when he walked away and why he walked away.
I feel like the next 8 years are going to be wild with the changing of the guard from boomer to millennial. We are going to go from Washington being a retirement home to a daycare very quickly. I'm not sure what that means politically. Millennials are kind of a jump ball.
Not sure there is a solution absent some sort of mandatory retirement age for politicians. Old people are the most enthusiastic voters and they are, by and large, plenty happy to vote for fellow olds. Look, the issue here is more of an existential crisis for these people. To stop working for them is to reckon with their own mortality. To admit their bodies are degrading and they are going to die soon. That's hard for many people. They have this mindset that they aren't old. Other people are old but not them.
For the "owning the libs" is my identity crowd. This like Christmas x10. It really looks like the Democrats have no pathway to success in 2024. Both options Biden staying or Biden stepping down look really unpromising. Republicans are likely to retain the House and gain the Senate and Whitehouse and have a 6-3 majority on the SC. That's pretty much total victory in a political sense. I can understand the glee many are feeling and since it's such a toxic situation, they are going to rub it in.
Trump is so terrible as a human and politician he’s still within the margin of error on polls vs the corpse of Biden. GOP policies are not very popular so even a ham sammich has a chance of still beating Trump…sad.
It’s July, ton of time until the election. Damn “libertarians” and their support of the far-right agenda. You guys are a joke…
They won't send back your Democrat card if you admit that things aren't going well for the Democrats or that things look bleak for November. Get a grip.
I suspect that this is how it will play out as well - but what I have learned over the years is that things can change really quickly. When the Republicans were running and Trump was emerging in 2016, it looked like the Republicans were screwed long term. Then when Trump lost in 2020 there were a lot of people that felt the Republican party was in for a reckoning. The reality is that Americans tend to blame elected officials for everything from natural disasters, to crime increases and economic issues. At some point the Republicans will get blamed if they have control of the government. The Democrats will come into power and the cycle will repeat - and if the Republicans go too far over the next 2-4 years, there may be a blue wave for awhile. While the prize right now is the 2024 Presidency, I agree with a lot of other pundits that the party that wins in 2024 will have a hard time winning the Whitehouse in 2028.
BREXIT took a few years, but it's an example of bad policy that got the public energized and mad, switching heavily to one side. But that's if you have a functional democracy that can swing. We can't say we will have one. I do not fear wild swings; I fear no swing.
It gives me hope that even relatively unknown Dems like Whitmer poll very well against Donald Trump. Hell, even Kamala's not looking so bad right now.
True of course. Nowtney want hnim to sta in desperately as he is the only possible Dem they can defeat. Hey, I am glad Trump is the GOP candidate as Niki Haley would be winning easily imho.
It reminds me a lot of the Democratic snark towards Trump's ascent. All the giggling from the conservatives seems odd to me. Be careful what you wish for. You don't want the Democrats replacing Biden.
