Who lets someone borrow their whole house generator? It’s like asking your neighbor to borrow their gas stove for a few days.

Another reminder: check the oil on your generators, even the standby ones.

Lol, more like asking them to borrow their full natural gas hot water heater, weight and complexity of connection-wise.

Right? Why not just let them move into your house for a bit?

Came with the house (although I had to pay an extra 20k to get it approved).

Wasn't the point of my post though - I genuinely don't know how it works - is it connected to some kind of tank, or is it just a central gas pipeline or whatever that the house is connected to. I know we have a gas stove, but I think that's it in terms of gas we use. And I have no idea where that gas comes from lol.

Must be nice to have a 20k generator that is completely useless. :)

That's a standby generator. If it came with the house, it's already hooked up to the house's natural gas line (likely underground) with an automatic switch. You do nothing. When you lose power, it automatically powers up and switches over to the generator. When you regain power, it powers down and switches back over to utility power.

For a generator of that size, it's typically tested monthly. There is also usually a small monthly service fee to maintain it. If none of that is happening, it might be non-functional when you need it.

I was more or less referring to people who purchase portable 10k+ generators with whole house setups. Its a bit silly to purchase a fixed generator for a suburban house that has 99.99% uptime.

I have damn near that exact same setup and spent around $2700 to run my entire house. It’s worth its weight in gold when needed.

They come twice a year to check it...were just here a month ago. I have a service contract with them (but forgot to ask them what I asked here).

    Thank you for the explanation.

(I also have the Mobile Link app which shows that everything is ok and the generator would be ready to take over anytime. My confusion comes from a statement by the former property manager of the house (an older lady) who at some point said something about some tank being half full or something.)

You're welcome. It can also run on propane. You might have a large propane tank buried.

Yes that's the thing I am trying to figure out. Maybe I need to contact the company and/or that old lady again.

Yes, I looked at the app, but it doesn't tell me anything about the question. Just that the generator is ready to run.

They're called children, and they cost much more than $20k
