How do you transfer movie files like off a digital camera to other people? I assume you have to upload the files to an FTP site, are there free ones like for digital still photography? I have religiously avoided using any instant messagers up to this point but I think I remember reading you can use them to transfer large files. Is that the way to go? How? Could you just designate the file for Kazaa uploads with some goofy name and just have your friends run a P2P search for the goofy name to download your movie? And last, I just read about software to turn your home computer into an FTP server, anybody using that ? What did you pay for it?
I would use Instant messaging, easiest way to do it by far. Setting up an FTP can be confusing if you arent computer literate. If you are, Use Ws_Ftp, good free program.
If you'd be willing to make an FTP out of your computer, then why don't you just make a torrent and share it with BT. I mean if your friends know how to use Kazaa, then they should be able to get the hang of BT.
Just use IM, it's easy, and there's no file size limitation, but it would help if you and your friend both have high speed internet.
Our family uses FTP picture storage sites for still pictures but I don't see that they will store movie files (their motivation is to sell picture prints) Can you give me a quick step by step on how to transfer files using IM or AIM. Like I said I usually turn off IM's in the start menu so I have very little experience with them.
From AIM help file: You can send a file or directory stored on any medium such as diskette, hard or zip drive, or network volume to your online buddies. To send a file or directory to your buddy: 1. Select your buddy’s screen name on the Buddy List window. 2. Click the People menu, and click Send File to Buddy. Note: If the Send File dialog box appears on your screen because you did not select your buddy’s screen name, enter it, and click OK. 3. Locate the file or directory that you want to send in the File or Directory to send field. To send a file, click File, and select the file. (Note that when sending a file, by default, AIM searches your filelib folder first. See Changing Your Default Shared Folder if you want to specify a different default folder to send files. To send a directory, click Directory, and select the directory. 4. Enter a file or directory description in the text box. This field is optional, but it can provide brief information about the content of the file for your buddy. 5. Click Send. The File Transfer Status window appears, indicating that AIM is waiting for your buddy to accept the file. After your buddy accepts your file, the window shows the file transfer status. You can change the pace at which the file is transferring by selecting Fast, Medium, or Slow, as well as pause the file transfer if you need to by selecting Pause . If you don’t want the File Transfer Status window to appear each time you send a file, you can set your file transfer preference to stop it from appearing. To cancel the file transfer, click Cancel. Notes: ?When you want to send a file, make sure you notify your buddy that you are sending it. Your buddy must be signed on and cannot be in an idle state. Once you send the file transfer request, your buddy can accept, reject, or ignore the request. Your buddy can also impose a warning on you, which can slow the rate at which you can perform activities in AIM. ?You can either create a folder that you want to store files that you want to send to others, or use the default directory to store your files. This ensures that other users do not see any files on your system that you don’t want them to access. WARNING: Your buddy can determine your Internet Protocol (IP) address when you send files. How big are your video files? If they're relatively small (my digital camera takes 4Mb videos), it's probably easiest just to spend the money on a web host and upload them there, and send people links to the videos. I'm using one which costs $40/year for the web hosting for 300Mb storage and 3Gb/month transfer. I'm happy with the service, customer support, and features so far.
try hpphoto.com It is 100M worth of space....no popups...and free you can share your albums with anyon...just send them the link you can make from within the site....and it allows them access to the pics...also good for linking to forums....
Better yet... burn these movies to CD and mail them to family. They can watch them on their PC's and it's only about a buck and some change to mail a CD.

That's a great suggestion. I've noticed that some people have tried sharing videos through yousendit.com, so I checked it out. It's pretty much ideal for Gene Peterson's specifications. There's no signup required, no software required, you can upload a file that's up to 1 gig in size, and it's free. The downside is that it gets deleted after 7 days and only 25 people can download the file until you have to reupp. Which is bad if you're trying to share something on a message board, but should be perfect if it's just with family members.
