Yeah, I’m rooting for the old coot to hang on just a little bit longer to spite these damn vultures from his old party.

    No -

He would be able to finish his term as President and could even run third party if he wanted to.

If the Democratic Party replaces Biden, funding will not be an issue at all - there will be a power vacuum and there will be plenty of powerful and wealthy people there to try and buy indirect influence.

While the Democrats can replace Biden, they have several problems - first there is no obvious candidate they all are getting behind. That is proving problematic for them and a lot of power brokers are not going to completely abandon Biden unless there is a clear alternative candidate the party will get behind.

Second - if the Democrats believed Harris would be a sure winner, they would already be behind her - they aren't at this point and until they have someone, Biden likely survives.

Democratic Rep. Schneider calls on Biden to ‘pass the torch’
    By Amy B Wang
    National politics reporter

Rep. Bradley Schneider (D-Ill.) is calling for President Biden to withdraw from the presidential race, making him the second House Democrat to publicly do so Thursday.

In a lengthy statement, Schneider lauded Biden’s record, saying that he knew five years ago that Biden would be a great president — “and he has proven me right.”

“President Biden now has the opportunity to secure his legacy and boldly deliver the nation to a new generation of leadership,” Schneider said. “The stakes in this election could not be higher. Donald Trump and the administration he would install are an absolute threat to the very core of our nation.”

Schneider credited Biden with rescuing the United States from “a potential despot” and restoring its standing on the world stage, as well as for guiding the country through the coronavirus pandemic and its recovery.

“In passing the torch now, President Biden has a chance to live up to this standard and seal his place in history as one of the greatest leaders our nation, and history, has ever known,” Schneider said. “He can lead the transition of power to a new generation that can build a stronger party and a stronger nation. I fear if he fails to make the right choice, our democracy will hang in the balance.”

Newsom: Biden was ‘exhausted’ from travel at fundraiser Clooney cited
    By Patrick Svitek

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) suggested Thursday he disagreed with actor George Clooney comparing President Biden’s halting debate performance to his appearance at an earlier California fundraiser.

Clooney called on Biden to end his reelection campaign Wednesday and suggested the president’s showing at the star-studded June fundraiser was just as troubling as it was at the debate that would later set off widespread alarm inside the Democratic Party.

Asked about Clooney’s observations at an unrelated news conference in Oakland, Newsom said the fundraiser and debate are “two different things,” noting Biden flew to the fundraiser immediately after a major international trip.

“I think the first comments I had to the president were like, ‘Who did your schedule?’” Newsom recalled, later adding, “The person showing up at that fundraiser was a human being, like any of us, exhausted, but as it relates to the debate, that’s a whole different debate and conversation.”

Newsom has served as a top surrogate for Biden in the wake of the debate, stumping for him in battleground states over the days that followed.

Rep. Stanton calls on Biden to step aside ‘for the sake of American democracy’
    By Amy B Wang
    National politics reporter

Rep. Greg Stanton (D-Ariz.) is the latest House Democrat to call for President Biden to withdraw from the presidential race, casting it as a move for Biden to make for the sake of American democracy.

“Donald Trump poses an existential threat to our Constitution and the rule of law, and to the hard-fought rights Americans have enjoyed for generations,” Stanton said in a statement Thursday afternoon. “A second Trump term would be devastating for our Republic and the stakes in this election could not be higher.”

Stanton added that the Democratic nominee must be someone who can “effectively make the case against Trump,” as well as hold the confidence of the American people to serve a four-year term.

“For the sake of American democracy, and to continue to make progress on our shared priorities, I believe it is time for the President to step aside as our nominee,” Stanton said.

There are now more than a dozen calls for Biden to step down among congressional Democrats, including three that were made privately during a party leadership call Sunday.
    update to the scorecard:

Rep. Ed Case (D-Hawaii) called on Biden to exit the race.

“Our decision on President, on who will embody and lead that choice, should be made on the merits, with no questions as to basic capacity to discharge responsibilities over another term,” Case said in a statement. “I cannot avoid the conclusion that that choice should be presented with another Democratic candidate.”

More than a dozen Democratic lawmakers have made similar calls for Biden to withdraw.

Political positions aside - this is going to be fascinating and historic. I cannot think of a situation like this having ever played out. Also - thus far, it has been fairly above board with individual members and power brokers coming forward and expressing their view on the nominee not being up to the challenge of being the party nominee.

I think that this has no chance of being successful unless the power brokers find a candidate to get behind that will unify the party. The issue is Kamala Harris, as she is going to be involved in this. If they do not get behind Harris, they risk her getting upset and alienating the female and black vote. If they were sure she would beat Trump, they would already have gotten behind her. They will have to do something soon or the momentum will be gone. It feels like they either want someone else as their nominee, or they are waiting for Obama and the other handful or movers and shakers to lead the way.

I still think the most likely outcome is Biden is rested and focused and does well in the upcoming interview and everything dies down and Biden wins in the popular vote but loses the Electoral College.

Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) has not explicitly called on President Biden to drop out of the presidential race but on Thursday reiterated his support for Vice President Harris to ascend to the top of the Democratic ticket if needed.

“VP Harris is on fire. She’s vetted, tested, and has been Democrats’ strongest messenger throughout this campaign,” Huffman wrote on X in reference to footage from a Harris campaign event in North Carolina on Thursday. “She’s next up if we need her, and we might. Let me be very clear: if/when President Biden passes the torch, I’m all-in for Kamala Harris!”

If wanted crazy old Trump to win I would be hoping for Joe Biden to limp to the November election.

Democratic Congresswoman Calls on Biden to RESIGN: ‘Americans Deserve to Feel Their President Is Fit’
    Isaac Schorr
    Jul 11th, 2024, 5:35 pm

Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA) became the first Democrat on Capitol Hill to call on President Joe Biden to not only drop out of the presidential race, but to resign from office on Thursday.

“I’ve spent the past two weeks listening to my constituents express their concerns about the President’s age and health. Like most people I represent in Southwest Washington, I doubt the President’s judgement about his health, his fitness to do the job, and whether he is the one making important decisions about our country, rather than unelected advisors,” said Gluesenkamp Perez in a statement. “Americans deserve to feel their president is fit enough to do the job. The crisis of confidence in the President’s leadership needs to come to an end. The President should do what he knows is right for the country and put the national interest first.”

the 25th amendment is more complicated than it might appear at first blush, so I have little expectation he will fail to serve out his term, but it's clear he cannot serve another term. surely he and his team realize that.

perhaps the plan is to run, win, then resign and had the reins to Kamala? if so, and you truly believe she's worthy of the job, why not let her run on her own?

I think the Democrats are sunk either way.

Stick with Biden - he's gonna lose, maybe in a landslide.

Change Biden out - there's a whole host of issues - divides the party? Who do you pick? How are they picked? Progressive vs. centrist Democrats and interests supporting different people, how does the money work? How does one do a billion dollar presidential campaign in 3 months? And probably a host of unforeseen issues.

Unless some sort of shooting star Democrat candidate comes walking through that door... I just don't see how it works out for the Democrats.
