One of my absolute favorite movies as a kid. If it was just about anyone but Taika and Clement doing this I'd be in ultra-cynical "great, another ****ing reboot nobody asked for" mode.
Was a paradigm-altering movie for me as a kid. Time travel, god/evil, British humor and snark, it was so awesome. I'd say the mythos is there for an expanded story and universe. But as you alluded, there are so many of these reboots and spinoffs that they aren't very special anymore.
Time Bandits was a very interesting movie. As a kid I couldn't tell you exactly what it was about but I remember it had some amazing scenes. The scene where they push out the bedroom wall until it falls into a void really stuck with me and remember having nightmares about somethign that like. Taiki Waititi seems like the type of director who could take on Terry Gilliam's vision. On a related point I would be very interested in seeing a remake of Brazil which I thought was Gilliam's best work. Even better than 12 Monkeys.
I felt so bad for the kid when he didn't get to stay with Sean Connery's character and got dragged away. Iffy about this remake, Watiti or no.
That was rough. It's not a remake, it's more of an "inspired by" in the Fargo-style from what I'm gathering. That's another reason I'm not totally dismissive of this.
It'd on HBO MAX if you actually want to watch. Also, on Criterion Channel. I think I'm going to have to watch it this weekend. Adventures of Baron von Munchausen is an underrated Terry Gilliam movie.
The scene where John Cleese's Robin Hood hands treasures to peasants followed by them getting wailed by some random dude just kills me every time. That and: "Here's to being rich!" "Yeah, stinkin' rich!" "And here's to Kevin!" "Yeah! Stinkin' Kevin!"
I don't know anything about time bandits but hoping Watitties does the right thing by having a very diverse cast.. And by very I mean mostly... Its a good opportunity to spread awareness and empower those without a voice. Will watch asap..
Brazil was the greatest and probably my second favorite movie of all time. That's why I hope nobody ever remakes it.
