I LOVE Eric Berger. Love Matt Lanza. Love Space City Weather. I find that in their effort to not scare people, they’ve underestimated storms and their impact for a while now. I almost wanna apologize even saying that because I read their stuff every single day, and they both seem like great people.
It’s sort of like they want to be a counterbalance to the over-the-top coverage of storms by the local tv news, but sometimes go a bit too far in the opposite direction.
During the insane mass hysteria generated by the media and mayor Bill White prior to Rita, Frank Billingsley was the only voice of sanity who did not recommend evacuating unless one lived in the actual evacuation zone. The pure stupidity and ignorance displayed during that event completely destroyed my "faith in humanity". The "legendary" Neil Frank totally embarrassed himself and almost seemed disappointed with Rita's impact. I've been reading Eric's science and weather stuff for a long time. He is very level-headed and isn't afraid to offer non-inflammatory opinions during hurricane season. I don't believe he's trying to counterbalance anything, he just isn't infected with the bug to exaggerate in order to generate clicks.
"Beryl is running out of time to strengthen—that is not a taunt, mind you. Please let the record show I did not taunt Beryl."
He’s built a whole website around that, and it’s great. He and Matt are my most trusted sources for local weather news.
My #1 go-to, no-nonsense source on incoming storms. For real-time local (close to your exact location) updates... well, this is what SCW said today: https://spacecityweather.com/want-t...ere-you-are-dig-into-your-phones-weather-app/ In brief: We’re happy to have Dwight Silverman, a longtime Houston tech journalist who is working with us behind the scenes, contribute this post on how to find hyper-local forecast information from the powerful computer in your pocket. Dwight explores some features and data in your phone’s weather apps you may not know existed.
By the way, I loved Dark Sky. Apple bought it and still can’t get those features to function as well as Dark Sky did.
