I was wrong. Alicia went in at southwest Galveston. Not sure why I thought Freeport. MadMax Fun Fact: a twister that spun off Alicia hit my home and knocked part of the roof off. We had to live at the Sheraton hotel that recently got knocked down near CityCentre right off I-10. That was pretty wild to 9 year old MadMax.
Beryl made landfall on Carriacou Island, Grenada, on July 1, 2024. In this GOES-East infrared satellite image you can see the island completely within the eye of Beryl. https://weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/2024-07-03-hurricane-beryl-satellite-imagery
Uh, having lived 47 years on the gulf coast I can’t remember anyone ever getting it right early. Seems about par for the course from every other year.
Alicia spawned from a disturbance that originated from the tail-end of a cold front over the northern Gulf of Mexico in mid-August 1983. The cyclone was named on August 14 when it became a tropical storm, and the combination of weak steering currents and a conducive environment allowed Alicia to quickly intensify as it drifted slowly westward. On August 17, Alicia became a hurricane and continued to strengthen, topping out as a Category 3 major hurricane as it made landfall on the southwestern end of Galveston Island. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Alicia ______ Really strange storm.
I remember it was fun too. Yard was flooded and it was cool walking around seeing clumps of fire ants clinging together. There were weird fish in the ditches as the water drained off.
Sorry about no response. I evacuated to the UK. 56 degrees when I got here this morning. The icon is usually not as accurate as euro/gfs but this storm it has it zeroed in on the upper Texas coast since Monday/Tuesday. Check it out at the tropical tidbits site. Use the dropdown box to pull up previous model runs. https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/ana...s&pkg=mslp_pcpn_frzn&runtime=2024070706&fh=-9
Those clumps of fire ants were vicious. The worst was walking in water and constantly getting bit by fireants, as if they somehow blamed you for the floods.
Another rightward shift in the track. I'm in Fort Bend. Looks like we're going to get the eye wall here.
Fire ants are the worst. One of the things I don’t miss about Texas. Crazy how they survive floods by forming living rafts.
