Not really, he's their entire franchise and they've drafted REALLY poorly...they were going to spend that money somewhere, might as well lock down Cunningham.

he can't be on any team outside of houston unless he's traded, nobody else can sign him for next season

I dunno, I could see Sengun being the type of guy to take a little bit less in an effort to keep the team together because I see him as a guy that wants to win more than he wants to maximize the dollars in his bank account. We'll see.

Sengun is getting the max. No hometown discount. “You tried to replace me every step of the way, you started Bruno Fernando and now you want me to take less?! FOH.” ;)

Christian Wood mostly his Rookie Year. Sengun laying only 5 minutes was embarrassing to watch by Stephen Silas.
Literally looked like Racism by Silas.

Detroit is another situation, like Toronto, where I feel like if Cade doesn't pan out, their whole rebuild is f*cked beyond repair. So obviously they were going to extend him.

Now, maybe the Rockets should extend Sengun right away. But it's not exactly apples-to-apples in terms of the circumstances.

I actually don't know because I don't know what Sengun is thinking or what his agent, family, friends are telling him. In an objective, rational, rule-based headspace, the correct call is clearly to wait, because it gives you more cap space to potentially improve the team next offseason.

But humans are not objective, rational, and rule-based. If Sengun is going to take the attitude of "f*ck you, I've earned this because I'm better than Cade Cunningham" then we have a conundrum on our hands. Humans have egos and emotions. If a decision not to extend him now leads to him demanding a trade later--then by not extending him now we're creating a problem. And realistically, the odds of using our theoretical cap space next season on a true impact player are slim.

And, further complicating matters--if you extend him now, you also have to think about Jalen Green's feelings about the matter. Do you want a pissed off Jalen Green? Do you want to give Jalen Green a max contract right now? Or maybe he's chill enough neither of these are an issue?

It's really not that simple, and it's hard to accept as fans, but... we simply do not have all the information necessary to make these decisions. When I posted this thread, I was curious to see where ClutchFans stands on the topic based on the information we have at hand, that's all.

I am conjecturing that the FO has had a discussion with Thrilla & Sengawd... Sengawd prolly knows he is getting max (or close to it)

Thrilla was probably told "more consistency + improved defense + higher 3%" and you will get close to the max.

We have no record that Stone lies to the team (just the media / Iko).

Htown wants to maintain that flexibility for the "slim chance" at 2025 FA.

    Just spit ballin.

How much is a baby hook dominant player worth in terms of championship aspirations? Domantas Sabonis may be the only similarly skilled player I can find to compare. Sabonis signed 4/186 - that feels about right for Sengun.

Front office waiting on these extensions sort of signals that its a race to the max for anyone on this team that can demonstrate an ability to impact meaningful postseason games the most.

Yeah just see if alpi will take 90% of the max and if he doesn’t just give it to him when you hear a team is prepared to offer it in RFA.

Green? Straight to RFA but with feelers for a trade

Who gives a crap about jalen’s feelings? He hasn’t shown that he’s capable of being a starter (or even close to being a starter). If he was willing to take something reasonable, maybe 4/80, i would consider it but otherwise he has to wait till he shows he doesn’t suck. Even sengun isn’t nearly good enough to throw away all that cap space because you’re worried he will be mad. If he’s mad, who cares. Nobody can pay him till next offseason anyway so not like he’s missing out.

Selected Sengun for max, Green for less. I don't think Green would take what I would offer, but I would give him an offer that makes sense. I don't have a good number in mind as it would take consulting with coaching staff on offering much more than KPJ got.

I think the only way to sell them both on taking a deal worth slightly less than the max is if you have a deal in the works to add a 3rd guy around there age and at the max level that we could get with our assets.

Some variables to consider with this approach are how well Jalen performs(he surely hasn't earned a near max yet) and how well our other young guns perform. Jabari, Amen, and maybe even Sheppard ( a long shot for sure) could prove they are potentially max worthy this year. If they do it could sway whether they offer Jalen the max knowing they will have the others to consider in coming years. Either way I see Sengun getting the max. Jalen would need to play at his streak level consistently for an entire season and postseason before I would offer him anywhere close to max money.

For those wondering why we're waiting on a Sengun extension, this is your answer.

The Sixers just got an all star and didn't have to give up any assets by just waiting a year to give their young star the max contract extension.

It would be incredibly stupid to squander that opportunity when there's no realistic consequence.
