Immunity is "absolute" for official acts regardless of motive and "official acts" are anything covered under his constitutional duties. So it is official that as commander in chief he could absolutely drop a bomb on Mar a Lago and as long as he ordered the military to do it through official channels there are no repercussions aside from impeachment. We've put into law that once a party controls either the House OR can block a 2/3 majority vote in the Senate for an impeachment trial, the President is truly above the law.
The news commentators who are surprised by this are either being disingenuous or just aren't good at reading the legal tea leaves. Isgur has been calling pretty much this exact result with hours of in-depth explanation for many months now. I've relayed that message for months here. Anyhow, instead of clipping and posting instant reactions that we all love to do because our brains have been destroyed by social media, maybe we should all take the time to read the 100+ pages of the decision, concurrences, and dissent. See y'all after that.
Unfortunately, I believe you're asking too much, not just of 21st century Americans, but of homo sapiens in general.
I suspect Justice Jackson and Justice Sotomeyer spent time reading this and their brains haven't been destroyed by social media.
The degree of immunity the maga supreme court just provided trump is beyond expectations. It essentially shuts down Smith's and any other investigations into trump...
Sigh, I'm on like page 19, and I'm behind on too much crap. Please read the whole thing. You're very smart. For real this time, see y'all next week. (Maybe not for real)
I have a dissenting opinion. Your stance is like that of the clipboard holders on sidewalks all over my city. "If you care about X won't you stop and sign this blah blah blah." That's literally not true. That's not the question. Their question is "will you take on my exact priority at this exact moment in time in this random public place?" I care deeply about this country. My reading a 100 page legal document, for which I have no real training to interpret, may make me better informed, but in our current system of government, I can do absolutely nothing about the outcome. My vote has been rendered meaningless in federal elections, and our system of government gives me absolutely zero recourse to disagreeing with the all-powerful USSC. Voting or not voting for Nancy Pelosi is not much power; my vote for Senators are rendered trivial versus the votes of fellow citizens in the Dakotas or Wyoming, for instance. My vote for POTUS is absolutely useless, given the electoral college. My reading this opinion can improve my posting on the topic or cocktail conversation but will have zero influence on our so-called democracy. But yeah... I'll give it a good scan when I can. Work and paying bills beckons for now.
