Unfortunately my cat didn't have much of a fast reaction time and that was even before she got old. I got her because we had a mouse problem and when I went to the shelter with my GF at the time we picked her out of three cats that we thought looked like hunters. She seemed the most compatible. About a week after I got her one night I heard her scrambling around and yowling downstairs. I was excited because I thought she had caught a mouse. I came downstairs and sure enough she was chasing a mouse. I was expecting her to get it and rip it's guts out. Instead the mouse figured out that when it stopped she would stop chasing it. So at one point the mouse turned and ran right under her and stopped. My cat looked at me very confused and not sure where the mouse went even though I could see the mouse's tail sticking out right under her. I ended up getting an empty yogurt container and trapping the mouse myself. After that I realized that my cat was a terrible hunter and any pest issues would be up to humans to handle.
My wife and I adopted our cat Morticia (Momo) less than 3 years ago. She was already 7 at the time, so she's 10 years 6 months now. She's generally healthy and we just hope we get a lot of good years out of her. Amazing what the kit'nens bring to our lives. 20 years for a cat though is not bad, not bad at all. Doesn't make it easier to say good-bye.
I love it and that sums her up very well. My GF who got her with me after her failure with catching mice called Lucy a "Bimbo" and said she was only getting by on her looks.
Lucy was probably thinking the same thing my cat does. "I'm on bug patrol and that ain't no bug" or "Good you see it too. I've got a nap to take"
It a good reminder for folks to spend more time playing with their cats. We often forget they are part of the family and that they enjoy the attention.
My cat had no problem getting my attention. Especially at 5:00 am when she decided I had slept enough and should go feed her
Sorry for your lost bro. Losing a pet can be tough, and I totally understand. Lost my little chihuahua terrier mix few years ago; had him for 19 years! Miss the little blind demon. Watched him grow from a lil pup to a gray blind old one. Still missing him as I type this. Wish I had taken more pictures of him to save as he grew.
Sounds like you really treated her well, she was happy up until the very last day and did not suffer over a prolonged period of time. It doesn't get any better than that. You were fortunate to have her and she you.
Thank you. I was fortunate that she had very few health issues and only had to go to the vet once. Year for checkups. It was really like she was old and slow but healthy and within a few hours just fell apart.
Thank you also to all of those sharing your own stories of saying goodbye to a loved pet. Every pet is unique but it helps hearing how others went through it.
Brought Lucy home for the last time. I got her ashes back today along with some of her fur and a paw print made in clay. I plan on sprinkling her ashes around the outside of my house since other than visits to the vet she never went any further than a few feet from my house.
So sorry for your loss. That's one heck of a ride you got to experience (20 yrs). Hang in there. She's in a good place and you'll see her again.
