Extreme Heat Is More Dangerous for Workers Every Year

Abbott and DeSantis don't care. Suffer bi*ches!

Federal and state governments should step up efforts—including adopting heat standards—to address increased on-the-job heat-related injury, illness, and death.

Sunshine State lives up to its name every summer, making work in the extreme heat dangerous for highway, construction, farm workers and others who are primary outside all day. Miami-Dade County was considering an ordinance that would mandate breaks in the shade and access to water.

But now, the state of Florida says no.

It’s joined Texas in banning counties and cities from establishing their own heat protection rules. The Florida law takes effect July 1. It also prevents local governments from raising the minimum wage beyond the state level.

From 2011 to 2021, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 436 workplace deaths due to heat exposure, and from 2010 to 2020, almost 34,000 workers suffered a heat-related injury that required time away from their job. OSHA has pointed out that it’s likely that these numbers are also a vast undercount.

The National Weather Service recommends people spend time in air-conditioned spaces, shade, and to consistently hydrate during intense heat waves. But for more than 30 million workers whose job requires them to work outdoors, like farmworkers or construction workers, those NWS recommendations aren’t often accessible, let alone guaranteed, on the job. The very nature of their work leaves them as much as 35 times more at risk of dying from heat exposure than the general public. And heat waves like this one are expected to increase in frequency thanks to climate change.

AUSTIN, Texas – On Thursday, Congressman Greg Casar (D-Texas) and Doug Parker, Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), met for a Labor Town Hall to talk with workers impacted by the extreme heat in Texas and what protections are needed.

“Working shouldn’t be a death sentence — but with extreme heat that’s only getting worse, the federal government must step in to protect workers,” said Congressman Casar (D-Texas). “Greg Abbott can try to take rest breaks away from Texas workers, but together with the Biden Administration, we’re fighting back and will deliver protections for all Americans on the job.”

“Knowingly putting workers at risk from the well-known hazards of extreme heat is irresponsible and wrong. Intense heat can be harmful to workers both indoors and outdoors, and OSHA wants to ensure that all workers and employers have the tools to prevent heat-related illnesses and injuries. Employers and supervisors must meet their legal and moral obligations to protect workers' fundamental rights, ensuring they do not risk their lives for a paycheck. Workers deserve the same confidence of returning home safely at the end of their shift as those who employ them,” said Assistant Secretary for OSHA Doug Parker.

Despite Texas Governor Greg Abbott's law banning local protections for rest breaks, every employee has the right to a safe workplace under federal law. As extreme heat becomes more prevalent under the climate crisis, Casar and the Biden Administration are working with businesses, labor leaders, and working Americans to secure additional workplace protections.

OSHA SAYS U.S. HEAT DEATHS A ‘VAST’ UNDERCOUNT AS OFF-THE-RAILS TEMPS PUSH TOWARD SUMMER

Heat surveillance around the country is plagued by “inconsistent reporting by medical professionals as a result of varying definitions of heat-related illness by jurisdiction,” that report concludes, as well as “lack of recognition of heat as a causal or contributing factor to injury or illness, underreporting to BLS [U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics] by employers, and workers not reporting injuries or illnesses due to stigma or fear, among other reasons.”

Climate change isn't a hoax, and workers out pouring asphalt, roofing houses, picking crops, and other type jobs outdoors need to be treated humanely. A break in shade and some water isn't something that should be deprived from employees.

Reeko I rock with 99% of your posts but I think you are looking at hitman point and missing what he is saying

All hitman is saying is what are we as black people even voting for in 2024. We put these people in office and they give tangibles to every other group and most of these other groups didn’t even vote for his old ass at least not like we did

trump did the first step act and the opportunity zone initiative that helped black men especially. And trump didn’t even have to do that. If Biden did something like that we would be getting in line praising him for prison reform. Biden DID NOTHING for black people. And Juneteenth and a hip hop holiday ain’t it, neither is appointing black women in Supreme Court. None of those symbolic gestures do it for us anymore. Especially in hard economic times like this. “We are not our forefathers.”

nah, y’all love to post the words of some useless rapper or gang member or some millionaire wanting tax cuts when it comes to the black community and politics…no other group does this

I don’t see Asians trotting out Awkwafina or Lovely Mimi

I don’t see Hispanics trotting out Jim Jones

I don’t see Jews trotting out Lil Dicky

meanwhile, we’ve got the likes of stripper turned rapper Cardi B, a goofy like 50 Cent, coked out Lil Wayne, freaking Hitman Holla…nobody knowledgeable, nobody respectable…these are the fools we got talking about politics and telling people not to vote  …these are the voices that get amplified…it’s a joke

Is the 16 billion invested in HBCUs not helping black men when it comes to education? Is record low black unemployment not helping black men? Is the expanded child tax credit not helping low income families? Is record low black child poverty not helping black families? Is a record number of black owned businesses not helping to increase black wealth? Is capping insulin not helping black people? Is increasing black enrollment in health care not helping black people?

but hey, Trump released some people from prison…

Whatever happened to Trump’s “Platinum Plan” for black people? Oh that’s right, it was an empty promise like 99% of the sh*t he babbles about.

you’re right, we aren’t our forefathers: they fought and died for civil rights and weren’t doing all that tap dancing and cooning that we see today for those who want to take them away
