Very early this morning I had to put down my cat Lucy. She was almost 21 years old and late last night suddenly couldn't walk, urinate or eat. I took her to the university of Minnesota animal hospital ER and they said she had an enlarged heart that had caused a blood cot that was affecting her and that given her age and other conditions she wasn't going to recover. I made the very difficult decision to not prolong her suffering.

It's been a rough morning especially having to clean up her food bowl that was still largely full from the last time I fed her. As she was an indoor cat her presence will still be felt for a long time as her hair is everywhere in my house.

Given her age I knew this day was coming but it didn't make it easier for it when it when it did. Especially since last morning she still seemed healthy and had woken me up to feed her. She lived for a long time for a cat and she will be missed by family and dear friends..

Sorry for your loss, losing our pets is never easy. You did the right thing for her.

We had to make a similar decision for our 15 year old dog last year, but you just can't watch them suffer. Prayers that you find peace in this time.

I also had a cat for 20 years who passed away at my home. She gave me a last cry before finally passing. I moved on (got a dog) but I still have my picture of my old pet as a reminder. The spirit lives on!

Ive had a few dogs that passed and its never easy, but imo the time spent is greater than.

I recently have 2 cats from a breakup to go with my 2 dogs and I was never a cat person. Ever. But now, there is one cat that I absolutely adore, that just kept growing on me. Now, Im pretty sure Id bawl as if she passed like one of my dogs.

It sucks. Give it time and get another one, cause as said previous, the time spent is greater than.

I'm sorry. I know all too well how hard cleaning up and putting the bowls away for good can be.

I've had my cat, Alice, for almost 3 years. Got her from the animal welfare league when she was 2. I've fostered dogs on and off and got attached to an AM staff/ Pitbull. One pet I really missed that died young from persin poisoning was a rabbit. My cat looks similar to your Lucy. Maybe I can find a pic to upload. It's always hard to lose a pet especially one that's become a family member.

Sorry to hear this news, OP. Glad Lucy had such an amazing span and so many good years with you.

Thank you for all of the kind comments. It’s been a rough day adjusting especially since I mostly work from home and there is a chair by my desk that she would sit at. I called it her work station.

Even though in the last few years her activity level had greatly dropped so she mostly just slept her presence is definitely missing.

Don't be surprised if you "see" her out of the corner or your eye or even "hear" her in another room. Our brains seem to get wired to interpret our environments with our fave humans/animals in them. Or this has happened to me after losing pets. (Never people, so far, interestingly, haha.)

this inevitability is why i don't have pets. except for fish, no one cries over fish, unless it's super expensive.

That’s happened me a few times today and keep expecting her to be on the couch in the living room or coming down the stairs.

It’s been 24 hours since I first noticed her struggling. I cleaned out her litter box out of habit and notice there was some poop there from yesterday. Her litter box is in the basement so it’s hard to think about that most of the day yesterday she could still eat, poop and go up and down the stairs. It was likely less than 8 hours that she went from leading a normal life to having to be euthanized.
