    I believe the Mets made the WS that year.

    RIP to the Say Hey Kid. Best player of my lifetime.

    Mays won a world series w the NY Giants in 1954; he also won the MVP 2 times

    IIRC That was the A's vs Mets series that the A's won.

    Charlie O sent Andrews home after he made errors in one of the games.

    Statement from President Joe Biden on the Passing of Willie Mays



    Like so many others in my neighborhood and around the country, when I played Little League, I wanted to play centerfield because of Willie Mays. It was a rite of passage to practice his basket catches,
    daring steals, and command at the plate – only to be told by coaches to cut it out because no one can do what Willie Mays could do.

    He was an original in so many ways.

    His Hall of Fame career in New York and San Francisco speaks for itself. Spanning three decades, his final box score was 660 homeruns, 3,293 hits, .301 batting average, 12 Gold Gloves, the 1954
    World Series Championship, and questions of how many records he could’ve set had he not been drafted into the Army during the Korean War after winning the National League Rookie of the Year award.

    He was also an original in perhaps the most important of ways.

    He passed away last night and today the Nation marks Juneteenth, a day of profound weight and power that reminds ourselves of the extraordinary capacity to emerge
    from the most painful moments with a better version of ourselves.

    On this day, we remember Willie Mays as part of the long-line of Black patriots who have helped us see a better version of ourselves as Americans and as a Nation.

    Jill and I send our love to the Mays family, his adoring fans, and all those he will continue to inspire with his one-of-a-kind legacy.

    Hall of Fame Broadcaster Vin Scully Gushes Over Willie Mays In A Meeting That Gets A Deserved Replay




    Both men were among the best at their craft, making their conversation at a game in San Francisco so special. It would be Scully’s 67th and final season as a Dodgers announcer.

    Scully saw it all during his time in the booth but Mays’ visit brought out the gushing schoolboy in him.

    “First of all, you’ve always been my favorite player, even though you wore the wrong uniform,” Scully said. “You’ve also been the greatest player I ever saw and I’ve said that for a long, long time.”


    It was a one-way chat for the most part as Scully piled on the accolades. He broke down Mays’ best catches, noting how he marveled over one while dining at old-time New York restaurant Toots Shor’s.



    Scully, who     died in 2022 age 94, called his wife, Sandi, over to meet him. She and Mays hugged.

    The video was shared on the Dodger Blue YouTube channel in 2016 and racked up more than 1.5 million views     after an X account posted it on Tuesday.

    If there is a heaven, perhaps Mays, who collected 660 home runs and 3,293 hits, and Scully can resume their conversation.

    Willie Mays stats are mind blowing.

    Posting a 6.3 WAR at age 40.
    Posting a 1.043 OPS at age 35, with 52 HRs.
    Posting a .900+ OPS until age 40, with only a few misses in his late 30s.
    Posting 6 years with 10+ WAR.

    I've heard many older baseball fans say Mays was the best player they've ever seen --- guy won 12 GGs too at a premium defensive position.

    Like Bagwell (.297)... Bonds (.298) misses many similar "only player" stats due to career BA. Bonds barely missed 3000 career hits too --- 2935.

    Bagwell missed having a functioning shoulder.

    Damn. Quite the speech, esp off of a softball question that I’m sure was intended to elicit “it brings back such amazing memories” nostalgia.

    I’m happy he is now associated with the Astros. That said, I still don’t want him influencing personnel decisions.
