HBO has released two trailers for Season 2 of House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones spinoff series that wrapped its first season way back in October 2022, with Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen — fire in her eyes — making a decision to fight for the Iron Throne.

The new season is set to debut June 16. The new trailers ask fans to pick a side in the ongoing civil war between Green and Black Councils that are fighting for King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra, respectively. As each side believes theirs to be the rightful seat on the Iron Throne, the Green and Black trailers reflect those two perspectives in separate yet complementary halves of the same story.

Season 2 returning cast includes Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans. Additional returning cast includes Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, and Matthew Needham.

New cast members are Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull, Gayle Rankin as Alys Rivers, Freddie Fox as Ser Gwayne Hightower, Simon Russell Beale as Ser Simon Strong, Clinton Liberty as Addam of Hull, Jamie Kenna as Ser Alfred Broome, Kieran Bew as Hugh, Tom Bennett as Ulf, Tom Taylor as Lord Cregan Stark, and Vincent Regan as Ser Rickard Thorne.

Season 1 of House of the Dragon picked up eight Emmy nominations including Outstanding Drama Series (winning for its costumes) as it set up the story of House Targaryen almost 200 years before the events of GoT. By the end, the family after the death of King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) had been cleaved in two, with one faction led by Viserys’ wife Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and her son Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) and the other behind his daughter — and original heir — Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and her husband Prince Daemon (Matt Smith).

That look from Rhaenyra in the Season 1 finale in the war-planning room after hearing of the death of one of her sons at the hands of one of Alicent’s surely means war: Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” books, up next after alliances are secured is the Dance of the Dragons, the civil war that will wreck havoc on the realm.

In addition to returning cast Cooke, D’Arcy, Glynn-Carney, Matt Smith, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Sonoya Mizuno and Rhys Ifans, newcomers to the fray include Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall and Matthew Needham.

Since the Season 1 finale, HBO has been busy with the franchise, ordering a second prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which is set between the times of House of the Dragon and GoT. The logline: A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.

It is expected to premiere in late 2025, HBO brass says.

In the meantime, check out the House of the Dragon Season 2 trailer above.

2+ year release schedules per season seems normal nowadays for streaming.

    Why everything so slow???

once they allow ai to help, they'd only need like a month between seasons.

not fun knowing the whole white(hair) walker bloodline will be wiped out in like 3 generations. they should really skip to the great purge where their whole line is being slaughtered or at least the rise and fall to the mad king. this internal family conflict drama isn't too exciting tbh. only interesting thing are the dragons and they don't really use them that much.

The end was a nice kickoff.

I should rewatch the first season for details, but I remember most of it being either gripping or clunky.

When you read comics they do these little editor note bubbles to remind you about stuff that might have happened 900 issues ago. This show needs that.
