Im curious to see how many other H2G2 fans there are here. In case you dont know, The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the classic comedy sci-fi series from Douglas Adams. For ages they have been talking about making a movie of this, and now it looks like it will indeed be in your theater in the next year. http://hitchhikers.movies.go.com/main.html no word on exactly when it will be released except for Sumemr of 2005....but that doesnt take away from the fact that it has actually finally been made. sooo....who's going? Who doesnt haev a clue to what Im talking about? Do you know where your towel is? btw....teaser is here... edit: heh...not fast enough to beat ya to that one..
Yeah, I've been looking forward to this as well. There was a trailer out, but it didn't really show anything from the movie.
I am so, so, so, so, so so so so so so worried that someone will **** this up. Douglas's humor was pretty unique, and capturing his genius in prose on the screen will NOT be an easy thing to do. I probably won't get my hopes up on this one since I don't really expect it will be done well.
We can hope. There's a video available at a lot of rental places from the old television series; it's not strictly a "movie" and the production budget was very low (the guy with two heads, for example, only looked like he could actually use one of them). But the series had good entertainment value and was true to the spirit of the book. Hopefully they could do the same these days, not that I'm betting on it.
I remember this as it was one of the early computer-based text games where you read a bunch of text, input a text statement or command, and it responds with more text(aka story). I never did make it through that game but I do remember playing it back when there were no video graphics-based games. I don't even think they had Windows back then. It was DOS and the DOS prompt. LOL.
the screenplay was done by Douglas Adams and a guy named Kerry Kirkpatrick, who worked with Adams on the screenplay before he(Adams) died. even tho the final screenplay was finished after DA died, it is for all intents and purposes done the way that he wanted it done. also, Adams family was onhand for quite a bit of the filming...so I think we can rest assured(almost) that however this comes out, it is the way that the orginal author wanted it. kinda similar in how the LOTR was done by a director that loved the original material enough to want to do it as close as possible to the books....the director and producer for HHGTG claim to care for doing this right because of their love of the original radio shows/books. also....just found this...John Malcovich is in it....not sure who he is playing...but still...
I read the first book a couple of years ago, and thought it was just "okay". But I have been listening to a lot of audio books recently, since I'm an office drone, so maybe I'll give the second book in the series a try.
I wasn't really speaking to the screenplay. The series was initially written as a radio show, right? It's already well suited to converstion to a movie in that regard. I was speaking more of the individual actor performances and anything else that may or may not be "hollywooded" up in a ridiculous manner. And as for the family approving, that is a good thing, but families don't always share the original authors vision, as was evidenced by some of Tolkien's family when the LOTR was released. It's hard to argue that Jackson made the best book to screen conversion anyone could have on LOTR, but didn't members of Tolkien's family still oppose it?
Ha Ha Surfy. I kind of played that recently. You can download all of those old interative fiction games for free and play them on your Palm (and pc). Those are great games for work because it is text based and nobody can tell it's a game.
I played it as well, on my Kaypro 2000 (or whatever the correct spelling is...). It took me a while to learn to lie down in front of the bulldozer. Then I read the book a few years later and was kicking myself because it was right there. Oh well, I stopped playing the game shortly after I figured out the bulldzer, so it didn't matter. I didn't like hearing Disney and the Austin Powers director were involved, but the Chicken Run person should be really good.
I love this story and I'm glad they're making a movie. It could be fantastic or it could be a real disappointment... I'll have to curb my enthusiasm just in case. I'm definitely going to see this though. The book is a fun read, but what really got me going was the audio book, read by the author. Douglas obviously knew exactly what all his characters' intentions were at all times and had the vocal inflections to bring real life to the words. But, he also had a surprising ability with the comic delivery and character voices. The English accent doesn't hurt either. Best way to pass the time on long road trips! This is one of those classics that I find myself quoting all the time. My favorite line... "drink up, the world's about to end."
The first book is an all time favorite... To use a towel as device or 'HAVE A QUICK MEAL " could take the mundane and make it very funny.... The names are hilarious sounding. Douglas adams was quoted saying he picked out sounds for names that sounded disgusting , but had no real meaning..."Slotty Bartfast" for example.. Excellent - I look forward to it
YEAH! I remember playing that on my dad's Commodore 64!!! I always got run over by the steam roller or whatever it was, but then again, I was like 6 or 7 when I was playing that game... I had no freaking clue what it was really all about.... But now that I know better, I love it!
should be great if it happens.... but seems like it is a step behind the Red Dwarf movie and we all know how long that is taking to get done
It has a release date currently of 6/3/05 and filming started in April. I think John Malkovich is the most recognizeable name.
according to the article I posted up there ^^^, the ceo of the indy studio that is making it says it is in the can and is in post production.. I cant say how many movies reach that stage without being released....but I would think that if they put all the money into filming it...they will probably release it. Tbar.....that would be Slartibartfast.... oh yea.....speaking of the tv series that Ferdinand's spouseD) brought up, if you want to see it...I found it on a bittorrent site a while back....the production values are real similar to a film student's project....but it is pretty damn funny nonetheless....
