We've seen the polls -- specifically the battleground states polls -- that have Bush with a strong lead. We know that so much can happen between now and election day. What types of October surprises do you see coming down the road?

The liberals certainly have a history of dirty shenanigans and last-minute cheap shots. Consider the following:

Bush's DWI 'news' days before the 2000 election
    The groping allegations against Arnold
The Haitian boat incident before Jeb Bush's election
For George HW, it was the timing of the release of the Iran Contra findings to maximize political impact
Trotting James Byrd's sister out to urge blacks to vote for Gore
George HW's phony trip to Paris to 'make sure' Iranian hostages weren't released before the 1980 election
I could go on and on

With tensions as high as they are *already* surrounding this election, we are all but guaranteed an October surprise. Possible surprises? The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth have a *major* ad buy coming up soon that will dwarf anything they have done previously. We know that activity around the Pakistan/Afghanistan border has intensified -- if Osama is caught it is lights out for the liberals, if Kerry is forced to sign the 180 form, skeletons in his closet that almost certainly exist will be exposed. Many on the Swifties' web site say that a big time surprise is coming from O'Neill & Co that will sink Kerry's boat in October. And you hate to say it, but there is always the potential for a terrorist attack (see Spain) although who knows which way this will point voters.

What events do you think will happen down the back stretch that could blow the race open further for Bush or possibly turn the tide to get Kerry closer?

Like the Watergate break in? Stealing Carter's debate notes? Arms for hostages? The Canuck letter? Fake pictures of Jane Fonda and Kerry?

I think it will either be a new swiftvets ad, or the U.S. will "catch" Osama, but my guess is that if he's going to be caught before the election, he's been caught already and news won't be released until near election time. One thing's for certain, the poo from both campaigns will not cease to be flung.

For the record, the now infamous photo of John Kerry sitting on the grass behind Jane Fonda is absolutely real. The fake picture that the liberals are fond of bringing up received very little air time and there are doubts as to who even generated it. It's a nice diversion, but the Kerry/Fonda pictured you've all seen is real.

    Any more potential October surprises?

The two big things that are still unanswered are..

    OBL & the debates

Those two things will have more impact than any ad, truthful or not, will ever have.

(p.s. not taking a personal shot at you or anything.. but it's honestly and innocently humorous that even when you're being open minded, as you're trying to be in this thread, that you're still biased and partisan as anyone I've ever known.. not even entertaining the possibility that Kerry could win, it's just gut bustingly funny.. but I do applaud you for your efforts)

How about this for a surprise? GWB doesn't get the debate questions before the debate this time round.

No, it's whoever wins the game of "Gotcha!" that matters, no real issues.

since we're on the topic of making stuff up, how about that rumor that Karl Rove gave Dan Rather those fake documents with the purpose of debunking them and further stalling the needed focus on the issues.

Honestly, if there's an attack, Bush will win hands down. Nothing convinces voters to vote conservative more than fear itself. This is regardless if it is discovered that Bush could have prevented the attack itself or if it was the result of increased aggression from our invasion of Iraq.

Just to clarify, by October surprise, I mean occurring IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER.

Not to derail this thread from its intended purpose, but Dan Rather has a history of partisanship. Trotting out forged documents in an election season for the sole purpose of smearing the Commander in Chief during war time, is an offense worthy of being fired.

The October Surprise will be Dubya wheeling Osama out of the prison cell he's been held in for the past few months.

I have never disagreed more with you on any topic. There is no way in Hell GWB and JFK are going to have a paint gun war.

It's conspiracy theories like this that give liberals a bad name. If Bin Laden had been caught the news would be out 5 minutes after it happened...

It is more than just conspiracy theorists and "liberals" who think that this is a possibility. Even GriffinFan, someone who has consistently maintained that he is totally undecided, said"my guess is that if he's going to be caught before the election, he's been caught already and news won't be released until near election time."

Just because someone's opinion doesn't line up with your worldview, that doesn't make them a conspiracy theorist.

I wouldn't be too sure about this if I were you. This Administration has proven several times that it is capable of pulling a fast one on the American people.
