I think Abreu has enough pride to retire rather than bat less than .100 for the next year and a half. He's playing terribly but I don't think he's a bad guy. If his struggles continue I don't see him sticking around too long
I don't know about that. He just said in an interview he expects to be an everyday player after coming back. It comes off as a very entitled and lacking self-awareness. It would be a different story if he had said he wants to earn his way to playing every day..
I would agree, the dude seems like a good guy and I cant fathom he would want to embarrass himself, if he cant turn it around maybe he looks at a buyout after the year, but that means we have to put up with this all season
There's zero chance he leaves 30 million dollars on the table and retires. He may get cut and never appear in another MLB game, but he sure isn't retiring.
Pitching hasn't been a problem all month, those numbers are just hangover from the abysmal start. We gave up 3, 3 and 2 in our last 3 losses, you usually shouldn't lose those games. And just because our offense is better than our pitching overall, doesn't mean it still shouldn't be better than it is. This team should be the best offense in baseball.
And we probably would have said there was zero chance he'd voluntarily accept reassignment. This dude is a former MVP and I doubt he wants two seasons like this on "the back of the baseball card"
He won't have to and he knows it. If he sucks for a little while longer the Astros will cut him. He also voluntarily decided to come back after 2 abysmal AAA games just in time for the most important series of the season.
Not to mention the union would strongly balk at an early retirement without pay. It would set a horrible precedent at a time when extra-long contracts are being handed out with the fully knowledge that the backend will be under water.
Already printed on the back of a Baseball Card. Somebody start a Poll for Jeff Bagwell Fans Vote, Send it to Jeff Bagwell over or under .100 for Jose Abreu
Except if you look at the last 30 days our pitching has been a good deal better than our batting and a lot of that has to do w two of our most important hitters, and one in particular, not carrying their weight. I'm not talking hits either, simply the inability to advance runners given the countless opportunities has potentially cost us 2-3 games this month alone.
Deliberately playing Jose Abreu over Jon Singleton and Joey Loperfido, I think it feels like the Astros are Tanking for a High Draft Pick.
That would mean everybody but Tucker and Meyers needs to be better. Altuve, Alvarez, Diaz, Pena have all been slumping as of late. Bregman/Abreu/Chas all year. That leaves just one hitter (whether it be Singleton, Caratini or Dubon) as the one guy that has no expectations and can only contribute a positive.
The replacement player for Bregman/Abreu/Chas would be on track to make the all-star game from this team’s standpoint….
