Not to rub it in... but Loperfido is not on the team, so he isn't in the top 5 of SLG and OPS on the roster.
Exactly. Makes so much sense. Guess being in the top hitters isn't good enough to make the team these days.
It has to be money. I would say that the advanced scouts or player development people see something that can be fixed, but if that were the case, they would have told us that by now. To me - his glove is basically not playable at this point. They won't do it - but he is sunk cost, and they need to release him and write him off as the cost of doing business. They already have too many distractions to worry about between pitching injuries, poor performances from Bregman, McCormick and Alvarez, a manager that is struggling and a pen that has been inconsistent. They really should let Abreu go. Either give the job to Singleton until he doesn't hit - or Dubon, and mix in sometime for Loperfido.
How long can we continue to trot Bregman in the clean up spot? We're essentially 1/3 through the season and save for one week he's been almost unplayable as a major league bat. Dude is hitting .178 in the top half of the lineup through 180 AB's and it's not like he's just hitting into bad luck - the dude is bottom 10-30% in almost all relevant advanced metrics.
From Tax Day to Memorial Day (35 games), Yordan batted .241 (34/141) and hit 5 homers (2 in Mexico City) and drove in 10 runs with an OPS of .703. That's a 22 homer, 45 RBI pace. Clearly not what we've come to expect and rely on from the big man. It's kind of glossed over with the struggles of Abreu, Bregman, and Diaz, but he's clearly been off, and with Altuve, like you mentioned in your post, also dropping off, this team is still running in place/treading water even while the pitching has sort of stabilized. The regression to the mean can't happen quick enough!
Alvarez isn't even in the same category as those two when it comes to hitting. He's one of our best hitters and those guys are two of our worst this year.
Chas is closer to his career averages than Alvarez is. Alvarez's pay reflects that of a signifcantly better player than Chas. Chas has to play better if he wants to play though I'd say their slumps hurt about as much over expectations.
Yordan Alvarez this season hasn't been as good as he usually is. I am not saying he is as bad as Abreu or Bregman - only that he hasn't been his usual self. There is lots of season left to play.
I agree, he's not playing as well as he is capable of right now, but it's nowhere near as bad as Bregman He's been terrible all year, and is the cleanup batter. That makes zero sense. I think our lineup is what's killing us most right now.
I just can't believe they would get the hard part out of the way of getting him out of Houston only to do this ****. At the very least give him a real test he has to pass first before he's able to rejoin the team. I really hope they have found something that is fixable/has been fixed as you suggest (and imo i wouldn't rule that possibility out entirely) as the alternative is pretty embarrassing.
While his .791 OPS ranks 4th on the team, that is a poor number for him compared to any other year he has been with the Astros, A .877 OPS was his worst previous to this year.
Our pitching is a far worse problem than our offense. In the AL, we are 5th in runs scored. 5th to last in runs against.
I expect a great start from Hunter Brown tonight. The sinker he added against RHB was really effective last start. I think he's turned a corner.
