https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5519524/2024/05/25/astros-jose-abreu-demotion/ More quotes in the article. Hopefully, like Peña with his leg kick in '22, there is a timing thing that can help him get to and through the ball. We'll see. Would be great if he found his stroke. Clearly it was bleeding over to his defense too.
Ones thing is for sure. if abreu comes back the same fans will not be as patient with him. I expect plenty of booing at Minute Maid
What a friggin mess. Exactly what we need. Someone that strikes out and hits into double plays. Sounds like they still have some work to do in fixing his stroke. Can't wait. Gonna be excruciating.
He doesn't deserve it, but the front office does. He can't be brought back right now. It is a massive mistake.
I’ll re-iterate this… its really up to Abreu given that he had to agree to be sent down in the first place. Either he, or his agent, simply has to say “put be back on the team or release me.” While I’m sure the players union would love to negotiate an “exile clause”… I don’t think theres much precedence for what the Astros are doing and what Abreu is agreeing to go through. Its weird.
I have a lot of respect for Abreu for taking this assignment, but if an ultimatum was put out there, release is the only option. You don't get sent down for poor performance and come back after only 2 games above rookie ball, and you were outmatched in those 2 games.
The response should have been "you are released"... good luck finding a place to help with your HOF case.
I really think this was a promised schedule to begin with. His acceptance to go down was contingent on a timeframe. Has to be.
I’m not so sure he doesn’t deserve it, if he was Altuve, Bregman, Verlander, McCullers, or even a former Astro like Springer, Marwin then don’t boo. But those guys all produced in Astros uniforms and helped us win games, Abreu hasn’t done anything for the Astros besides rob them of 60 million. If he doesn’t want to get booed, he can play better or retire. Which he won’t cause he’s got 30 million left to collect.
This is a Hail Mary/last ditch effort salvage job to the max. Astros have to pay him regardless. 10% chance that he tinkers/works on stuff and is able to get back to where he was last October? 20%? 5%? They’re giving it a chance with his permission/consent. Maybe it would have been easier had he said “no”, then they would have just released him.
The Yankees did boo Aaron Judge. And I will be okay if we boo Bagwell if seen on the Jumbotron. And I'll be fine with burning his jersey in the parking garage.
