I remember well that year. Everyone thought these guys were going to lead us to the promised land. Drabek even bought a house where my Mom lived. Life seemed good!

Drayton McLane makes his first big splash as Astros owner after the 1992 season, signing free-agent pitchers Doug Drabek and Greg Swindell to four-year contracts totaling $38 million.

Though the Astros improved to 85 wins in 1993, it was in spite of Drabek and Swindell’s 21-31 combined record. Swindell went 30-34 with the fourth-highest ERA (4.48) of any pitcher to pitch at least 500 innings for the Astros. Drabek checked in at 38-42 with a 4.00 ERA.

It turns out signing free agents isn’t the problem. It’s signing the wrong ones at the wrong time.

Man, did that turn out sour :(

Plus we all thought Eric Anthony was gonna hit 35 hr’s. We finally had our cleanup guy behind bagwell!!

I remember we opened the season by getting swept by Philly. Yes the Phillies won the NL that year and they were nasty but that was the start of the disappointment. Very disappointing season.

Quiz Question: If Abreu returns and bats .200 with no power, how long before he is shipped out for good?

The serious answer is it depends on whether the team around him is winning.

If the team is still winning despite him they will probably drag his carcass around for another month or 2. If the team slumps, probably not very long.

Dragging his carcass around. That's pretty graphic but if fits. That's what it seems like to me as well letting Jbreau hang around and take up space in the batting order not to mention his less than stellar performance as a defender.

A 4.48 ERA today would be just mediocre these days.

I think Altuve and Bregs would say something once they hit their career high in errors on catchable throws to first.

The A's are so bad you would think they'll eventually hand this game to the Astros hopefully

    Whoops wrong thread

    I can respect that

It's gotta be hard to lose the ability to do the thing you love and have done for your entire life

Also said demotion best thing he's gone through in his career. Obviously he's not trying to suck on purpose. I'm hoping this stint ends up helping him. I'm not expecting homeruns or anything. Just get rbi singles or get on base and hope the batters after you can bring you in.

Right, unless a guy just straight up jakes it and quits I can't get really mad at a guy who is trying and just can't do it anymore

Anthony Rendon can go **** himself, he just does not care at all, really never has, and is happy to do minimal work and cash checks....I don't get that from Abreu

Father Time does not care who you are

    Which one?

    I bet he's left-handed too!

But Dubon's right-handed so I'm not totally sold on your master plan

So then platoon them if you must. That combo is much better than Abreu. So much better.

Yeah but Abreu will get another chance to redeem himself. And it won't be 1 chance and that's it. He'll get a couple of chances. So I'm hoping he makes good use of his opportunities. Or at least be reliable if they need a pinch hitter.
