From CIA.Gov The Paracel Islands are surrounded by productive fishing grounds and potential oil and gas reserves. In 1932, French Indochina annexed the islands and set up a weather station on Pattle Island. China has occupied all the Paracel Islands since 1974, when its troops seized a South Vietnamese garrison occupying the western islands. China built a military installation on Woody Island with an airfield and artificial harbor, and it has scattered garrisons on some of the other islands. Taiwan and Vietnam also claim the Paracel Islands. pretty much the same description on Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea. Taiwanese fishermen have occupied the island since time immemorial oil reserve was discovered in 1968 Japan Annexed it in 1974; and built military installation there, kicking the Taiwanese fishermen off the island Japan renamed it Senkaku Island
Oh, wow, some sort of "check mate" question. Semi-conductors are made in several countries. Look it up yourself. Obviously, Taiwan makes a lot of them but they are losing market share. There's nothing inherent about the geography of Taiwan that means semi-conductors have to be made there.
Who says it will require a "chaotic and pricey adjustment"? You? 30% of the worlds oil passes through the Persian Gulf/strait of Hormuz every day. The Persian Gulf/strait of Hormuz runs its entire length right next to Iran. Yet the world still spins. So what if China takes Taiwan? Most American won't know or care. You claim there will be some sort of economic disaster. Yea, I've heard that one before. Prove it.
Right.... because Iran hasn't declared war on its neighbors and/or shutdown the Strait of Hormuz. If it was shutdown tomorrow.... would it be a "chaotic and pricey adjustment" You don't seem to realize it, but your argument is basically "as long the status quo remains, things will be good".
There are many. 1) "It was a land without people for a and without people" google it if you need to. 2) Ethnic leansing started from day one, including before 1948 when the UN gave something gave a share of the land to Euro Jews greater than their share by population. Wanting.more of the land they started ethnic cleansing a few months before the official date to start the newly created state. . 3) Arab armies attacked because they were pissed off at the ethnic cleansing. 4). The Israeli army leaders sat down and divided up which groups would ethnically cleanse which city, town or village. The Palestinians did not leave voluntarily. etc.
I learned that a long time ago, friend of mine got referred to as Chinese, and he angrily corrects them: "I'm from ****ing Taiwan" If Taiwan wanted to be a part of China then Taiwan would be a part of China. See, Ukraine : Russia
it's interesting how little of this history you actually know. I'd suggest some basic reading, not on on google or the internet. Start with The Ottoman Centuries for a general history of the Ottoman Empire and its effect on the Middle East. Then, read A Peace to End All Peace, about WW1, the end of the Ottoman Empire, and the formation of the modern Middle East. Lastly, try Palestine 1936, about the great revolt, and how decisions made then by both sides have framed the conflict we have today. cheers.
And then read: The Case for Palestine: An International Law Perspective The Case for Israel The Invention of the Jewish People Hundred Years' War on Palestine Israel: A Simple Guide to the Most Misunderstood Country on Earth Palestine: A Four Thousand Year History Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East
20 years ago even some in my family were fine with a reunification of Taiwan with the PRC. It looked like the PRC market reforms would bring it more in line with Taiwan and the one country two systems would work. All of that has changed with Xi Jinping. Many Taiwanese have seen what happened with Hong Kong and have little faith that the PRC would honor any such agreement.
I have probably read more books on Palestine than you have. Those content with the prevailing narrative are easily content.
No, it's not rapidly becoming obsolete. We need at least another decade to reduce our dependence on Taiwan (the CHIPS and Science Act has made this possible). If China were to invade Taiwan tomorrow, Nvidia's stock would lose 50% of its value, and the Nasdaq would crash. It would very likely trigger a global recession, and progress in AI within the US and the West would grind to a halt. (sadly, this gives China another incentive to act earlier, if ever)
The recently escalated US-China conflict, which began shortly before COVID and intensified during the pandemic, is dumb and benefits no one.Tone it down and be more cooperative. Address issues through international laws and diplomacy.
We did some very stupid and immoral things because of the ramped-up fear of the Domino Theory, including supporting dictators who committed atrocious acts against humanity.
Seems screwy to have a vid devote 90% of its time convincing you that China wont invade only to add the caveat that they will if the US doesn't Spend More than the trillion dollar budget they have slotted... If Xi took a page from Reagan and Star Wars, they could saber rattle the **** out of us to provoke further waves of unchecked and wasteful spending for the next Zumwalt, Little Crappy Ships and other new toys to mercilessly destroy the intermediate generation of paper tiger boats they have now. Everyone already knows China could take Taiwan over by burning it and the world economy down to the ground..even if we and our allies burn another 200B each. That's a heavy What-If premium, but hey, Defense is one of the last bastions of Pork where Everyone Gets Fed. Amirite Boeing?
