A lot of this is the recursive nature of polling.

The economy is not anywhere near that level of unemployment so why would you put a poll question on it that allows it as an option?

So that you can generate a headlien that says "people somehow think unemployment is mega high when it's actually insanely low!" And then the think piece says "WHY IS THIS?"

You know why people think that? Because you gave tehm the poll questiion on it.

If you framed the poll differently, you get different responses. In fact, most people probably learn more from teh state of the economy from the poll question itself than from any independent basis or assessment - why wouldn't they? Most people dont' hang on the monthly household survey or the payroll survey. They have no basis to answer the question at all, other than what the options presented are in the poll.

Just in general, the state of polling in America in general, and how those polls are presented to the public, seems quite terrible and seems to ingnore almost evertying that's been leanred about behavioral psychology in the last 50 years.

Like if you asked if the US was in a recession, which is technical thing based on GDP over consecutive quarters, that most people aren't even going to be able to inductively reason themselves, I'd expect the results to be 50% yes, 50% no. (exlcuding the "don't knows). And lo and behold, that's not that different from teh actual distribution.

It's not the pollsters fault that Americans are illiterate morons. No amount of deceptive polling should lead to half of Americans thinking unemployment is at 2010 levels.

Again when you ask folks about their personal finances they are quite happy

Americans are easily brainwashed. There's no other reason why they're happy with their personal finances but think the world is in flames. It's the media + MAGA disinformation

Look, americans are dumb as hell, but the pollsters are even more willfully stupid.

Like, why is the question "how does the president handle the economy" a staple feature of every single poll in existence for the last 100 years, when the President doesn't handle the economy, the feedback loops between predential initiatives and economies are largely measured in decades rather than months, and can't be disambiguated, and economists can't even universally agree on what "the economy" is or by what metric it shoudl be defined?

They create the perception that they seek to interpret in large part.

I respect your opinion and you're a smart individual so we will agree to disagree. The media has used the word "inflation/recession" over 15000 times in the past few years while never mentioning recovery or job gains

    absolutely,

the same way he is gonna wear the hat for
    • avg monthly job creation of > 100K every month
      • 15 million jobs in 40 months
    • steading lowering unemployment, leading to the lowest unemployment rate in history
    • lowering the inflation from 9 to the current 3%
    • signing into law the infrastructure bill

likewise, the trust fund baby is gonna wear the hat for
    • the only POTUS to has realized a net loss in job creaton under his watch
    • ignoring / minimizing the pandemic
    • unable to come up with a plan to
      • rebuilt the infrastructure
      • replace ObamaCare

Going to point out again that Trump has no plan for combatting inflation. His policies will likely lead to greater inflation.

Also this idea that Trump is some great economic conservative or is actually out to help the poor and middle class isn't supported by his first term. Under his first term spending and the deficit still grew. Trump's policies exacerbated issues with the poor and middle class as his tax cuts greatly benefitted the wealthy, housing prices were high and his trade war hurt the agricultural sector. Even his claims to bring back coal the coal industry actually lost jobs during his term.

specifically, his ill-conceived / ineffective trade war---causing global supply chain bottlenecks.

Also this idea that Trump is some great economic conservative or is actually out to help the poor and middle class isn't supported by his first term.
when he was fired by the American voters, the debt level was 40+% higher than when he was hired.
by comparison, under Biden, withe 8 more months to go, even with the largest infrastructure bill ever, the current debt level is 16 % higher than when he took office.

@HTM, trump has to wear this hat too

Listen I agree with most of what you say above - I'm just saying it never gets pointed out in all these polling stories how incredibly ****ed up and dumb the polling industry is.

Like why do we ask questions that we know are logically incoherent or that we know people have no reasonable basis to answer on?

It's maddening that it's just accepted as C
conventional wisdom that "Presidents handling of the economy " are reasonable metrics or survey questions to ask random people any more than just randomly asking people to guess the atomic weight of Helium and saying "hmm should Helium start taking Ozempic" if they guess too high

People need to start questioning the accepted framework of institutions - the media/polling complex being one of them .

Yea, ok, you're clearly not listening.

Good luck telling someone who feels pinched their everyday/weekly/monthly expenses like groceries, fast food, rent, insurance, cars etc etc have gone up markedly while Bidens been in office about Bidens unemployment numbers or the infrastructure bill and see how far that gets Biden.

    Nobody cares.

Probably the #1 thing people care about is their everyday/run-of-the-mill expenses and it's not good for a President when those increase dramatically when he is in office.

Nobody cares. He is simply the guy not in charge while inflation has run rampant. There is a massive political cost for being the guy in charge while everyone's rent, insurance, groceries, fast food, cars etc etc go up massively in price.

Trump was in charge when the USA realized a net loss in job creation during his 4-yr term

    yip,

it's difficult to pay for the everyday/run-of-the-mill expenses when you don't have a job
    • Trump led to a net loss of 2.6 million in job creation,
    • unemployment was ~~ 5.5 to 6% when his was fired

it is much easier when you have a job
    • Biden has creation job growth every month, avg > 100K each month; so far 16 million jobs in 40 months
    • with the unemployment rate of 5.5 to 6% inherited from Trump, Bidenomics has reduced it to below 4%

    Who is a liar again?
Let's be reasonable. You can't expect a politician not to deficit spend. The only one in forever who pulled that off was Clinton, and he had the dot com explosion to magically drive GDP (and tax receipts) through the roof. Rare is the politician that won't vote to spend like a drunken sailor. If only we had more Ron or Rand Pauls in the government.
I don't see either candidate changing that stance if Jesus came down and told them to do it.

That wasn't a lie. Trump talked about injecting disinfectant. If the issue anyone has with that is Democrats saying "bleach" or "drinking cleaning fluids", then they are part of the problem.

previously, the confused one had blamed the Fed, not Congress, for the deficit,

Actually he said something about bringing a powerful light inside the body. Then said that he was amazed how fast disinfectants killed COVID, and asked his medical expert if there were any way to have some sort of injection of disinfectant or almost a cleaning, and that they should look into that. Then he said of course all of that should be overseen by a doctor.

When there is actual video of the exact words, I don't know why people would lie about what was said. Maybe @adoo didn't have 1 minute. Or maybe I am wrong, is there a different video where Trump suggested drinking bleach?
