Ok fellows, My girlfriend and myself have been living a hell of an apartment life the last month or so. I moved into my apartment in late July, and everything was awesome. We looked into the future at a nice life while in the apartment, very spacious for us and there were no complaints at all. Come mid-August, this 32 year old african american male moves in next to me. From day one he comes over to introduce himself and he lets out a little information telling me he got evicted from his last apartment because he played his music too loud. (He described to me that the volume wasn't too loud, it was the heavy base.)

That very night I could begin hearing the music. Not at 8pm but in the later hours like 12am-3am, I could hear through the walls, and feel from my couch the base from his stereo. This continued for 2 more weeks before I got fed up and notified the management office and they sent a notice to him, reviewing the consequences if the music is not turned down. There are days when he OPENS his FRONT DOOR and his bedroom window so the whole world can hear his crappy r&b music. In addition to this he has been known to come over at 1am to borrow MY cellphone for "5 minutes" that turned into 30 minutes. Just last weekend, I left out of my apartment to take my garbage out, on my way back, I notice his glass patio sliding door was completely SHATTERED. I contacted the office and they sent someone over to find out what happened. I overheard them talking and my neighbor told the maintenance worker he came home in the morning and lost his key... so he kicked the door in.

Now over the last 2 weeks I've been talking to the management office constantly. I've been complaining until it's hard to come up with anything new to say. Tonight my girlfriend and I were at my apartment and his music was extremely loud (after he was notified earlier today about it) so my girlfriend got fed up and banged on the wall and I followed her and hit the wall and I guess it disturbed him because he comes out of his door and bangs on my door, cussing, asking why we did that. I refused to answer and we ended up escaping back to her house where it's quiet and safe. I don't trust the guy. He is a gangster if I've ever seen one. The fact he is not complying to these responses by management leads me to believe he is either a hard alcoholic, he's doing drugs, or he has a serious mental problem where he can't comprehend a word anyone says to him. I really need some advice on what to do next. I've thought about the cops but not tonight after we banged on his wall. The courtesey officer hasn't responded to the last 3 calls I've made to him.

I know this is alot for you guys to read but I really need your help. I'm going to let the leasing office know that if he isn't evicted soon, I will look into breaking my lease. There are plenty of complexes in Houston and I deserve better than a neighbor like that. Thanks guys.

    -Paul

I had the opposite happen to me a week ago, I usually come down to richmond from tech every 2-4 weeks, well i come back this one week after almost a month, and before that i hadnt been in town for almost 3 months. Well i come back and I am coming home, open the garage door, and still have my music playing. Its 10 pm, then im about to close my garage door, and this guy is in my driveway. I say wassup, and hes like WTF man, you need to keep your music down. I realized it may have been a tad high, but nothing that would get in through a neighbor 30 feet away. And I had my windows up, so that just made it less noisy. Well i apologize, but this clown says that "ya, you need to keep it down, my lil one sleeps at this time," i apologize again, and say it wont happen again, and he says "you do it all the time, you realize that right" i was like wtf? i havnt been in town in almost 5 months, I didnt even have speakers in my old car, wth are you talking about, and hes like just dont ever play music that loud ever again. And he left, i was about to blast all my speakers in the house just to piss him off, but i then thought about my family who actually lives by this turd, so ijust ignored him.yep neighbours suck.

Dude, if he is pissing you off that much, I sure as hell wouldn't let him borrow your cell phone. Good call threatening to break your lease though. I imagine that is something that will get your office in gear.

I feel for you, Paul. I once had a college suitmate who blasted wierd techno music through all hours of the night. I complained to the offender, and he said "wear earplugs. " I complained to the RA, who did nothing. Then finally one day, when this guy was drunk, I went to his room, took his stereo system, and dropped it from the third floor window I was in.

Well that stopped the music for about 5 days. He got a new one. Then finally I relented and switched floors.

Have you tried blasting your own music to see if it pisses him off.

Try AC/DC, or better yet Nickelback...

    Fight fire, with fire...my friend

stand outside his window in your boxers with a pound of pure rock salt in your left hand... in your right hand... hold a duck that has been plastered with petroleum jelly. When he wakes up... scream at the top of your lungs "THE KING OF HELL HAS COME FORTH TO CLAIM HIS OWN" and hum Incense and Peppermints by Strawberry Alarm Clock. When he comes out to see what is going on, throw the pound of rock salt down on the ground and then position the duck directly on top of it. The salt will make the duck disoriented at first and it will smell the salt to see what it is. Get a bit of a running start and do a cannon ball right onto the duck. If you have positioned yourself and the duck correctly, it will shoot from your knees straight at the guy's head. When the duck smacks into his head, take the salt and sprinkle it over him.... tell him it's winter time and sing the chorus to "Criminal" by Eminem.

This will make him get the drift that you do not want to be messed with.

    Man, I pity your pain.

There are a couple of things you could do.

    1. Don't let him borrow your cell phone, just say no.

    2. If he starts playing lound music, continue to bang on his wall, fight fire with fire.

    3. Buy a gun, get the license to carry concealed firearms if you think it will come to that, (i.e. you really start fearing for your safety.)

In all honesty, if it was really me in the situation, I would probably just continue to file complaints until I am too fed up and break the lease.

Go to a lawyer and see what you can do to the complex if they dont do anything for you....you could get a few months rent for "HAVEING TO STAY AT YOUR G/F.."

with half that money you could go to the dollar store and buy 20-30 plates, and break those on this guys head, or infront of his apartment door, or management.... but i guess we all have our own ways of dealin with stuff. ;)

Next time-- if there is a next time-- don't wait two weeks to complain about a neighbor doing the same thing which they "bragged" about having gotten them evicted from their last apartment.

Seems like you should have gone over after the first night and asked him to tone it down and informed the management as well.

Unless you live in a two unit complex, I'm sure the other neighbors around him are tired of it as well. Go to them, and come up with a solution. Make sure they are complaining to the office as well. If verbal complaints don't work, get a written one. This way if nothing gets done in a fair amount of time, escalate it to corporate office.

Once a mob of angry residents starts writing and calling to corporate, something will get done.

This is the civil way to do things.

In my secret fantasy world, you could gather up your neighbor, and bum rush his apartment, kick his ass, break his right arm, and tell him if you ever hear his music again, it'll be his left arm next time.

    Good luck.

Sharing walls sucks. I had the same problem 3 years ago. This guy wouldn't start playing his "music" until about 1 am every night. Luckily for me, he didn't move in until there was only a month left on my lease. I didn't have to break it, but when it was up, I was so out of there.

I ended up moving into a garage apartment in the Heights instead. It was smaller, more expensive, and farther away from work, but it was worth it because I didn't share walls with anyone. That's one of my biggest pet peeves.

You can't "fight fire with fire". It'll only make things worse. You'll be stooping down to his level. I would keep bugging management about it. Getting your other neighbors involved is also a good idea.

If this doesn't work, just leave a bullet in his mailbox with a note that says "if the music doesn't stop, the next one's coming air-mail"

    LooneyToon,

Your neighbor sounds like a real idiot if there ever was one. I suggest you suck it up and move if the office won't evict him because he obviously isn't into playing by the rules. Please don't loan this guy your cellphone ever again. That's just a waste of phone time on a worthless scumbag.

In my opinion, he should have been kicked out or evicted for kicking in his glass door because he didn't have a key. Don't they have a phone number you can call in case of emergency lock-outs?

You have already put up with way too much. If the front office doesn't get it, then "F" them too.

I don't let him borrow the cell phone anymore. Yeah, they have a courtesy officer on duty overnights that has a spare key to every apartment which he could've done. But it's gotten to where my girlfriend just really fears for her safety. I have 9 months left on my lease, thats too long to live with this. In my situation, I wouldn't be able to afford another complex though if I broke the lease...

Eh, that's the joy of communal living. Sometimes you just gotta put up with crap from the neighbors. The apartment people will lose a lot of money if they evict the guy and can't immediately fill his apartment with a rent paying customer, so it's in their best interest to keep him around. If you break your lease, then I'm sure you're stuck with a stiff penalty, plus I believe it shows up on your credit history, so it's not a good deal for you at all. The best solution in my opinion is to just try to be friendly with the guy and explain why it's bothering you. Banging on the walls will make it worse.

I can't really talk though, since I was 1 more noise complaint away from getting evicted from my old apartment. It got so bad that the chick below me sent her scrawny azz boyfriend up to try to "intimidate me". Pulease.
