This is going to be my last social media share because honestly this is so low effort it’s practically meaningless.

UChicago broke up its encampment last night. Comparing their alumni communications with news from people on the ground and the newspapers, the school is blowing a lot of sunshine up our asses, as heyp used to say. They never engaged meaningfully with protesters but want to pretend that they did. Ultimately, monied donors have more say on the conduct of the university than the students, tenured professors, or anyone else in the actual school community. It has been a stark reminder for me that elite schools are power players in industry and politics and ultimately they answer to money, just like any other institution. Lots of good things happen in university communities but there is nothing noble about the university itself.

    They should protest Hamas.

    Instead, they support Hamas.

@Nook you're right, students don't care so much. There are more important things to them.

Not surprisingly, we get a distorted view through the media and from politicians.

By the numbers: Only a small minority (8%) of college students have participated in either side of the protests, the survey of 1,250 college students found.
    • Students ranked the conflict in the Middle East as the least important issue facing them out of nine options.
    • It landed behind health care reform, racial justice and civil rights, economic fairness and opportunity, education funding and access, and climate change.

yes, but also attention gives them the loud voice... it's somewhat the egg and chicken

in this case, House Republicans gave them the most attention... without them, it probably stayed in the background and fade

    Just asking questions.

Where does her tuition go? To pay for PART of monies needed for her yearly education. The rest is made up by the university's endowment. Now if she does not like how the endowment is invested, she can pay for the differences out of her own f*cking pocket ... and after she graduates she can make a point to never contribute to the university's endowment.

I strongly suspect that bullying is against the school's policy and these two "students" are in violation thereof.

The SCW echo chamber has this on high volume.

UVA protesters recently got arrested ... by the state police ... sent by the asshat Virginia R governor.

    Of the 25 protestors arrested
    • 10 UVA students
    • 4 UVA professors
    • 11 outsiders
Only 1 of the 25 resisted arrest. My money is on one of the outsiders.

UVA has an enrollment of 22,000. One of you pointy head liberals can do the math. The SCWs math says 100% of students hated Israel, were violent and were arrested.

One may want to compare and contrast this with the 2017 White Nationalist “Unite the Right” rally ... where the hate speech incited one person to kill someone else with his car. Remember there were good people on both sides: KKK, Neo Nazis, Proud Boys, etc

Any "solidarity with 'Palestine'" should start with wanting to free 'Palestine' from Hamas, Islamism and anti-Jewish hate indoctrination.

Interesting view. I tend to look at the interest of outsiders to push an agenda using university students — as evidenced by the polls of student interest. Especially in a city like Chicago, there’s no shortage of supply of participants from outside the university community.

I’ll be in Cambridge for a reunion at the end of the month - curious what my first hand view ends up being. Similar alumni communication, but I thought it denoted a thoughtful difference between protected speech and harassment.

If Jewish students were bullied, I would be outraged.

If Islamic students were bullied, would you join me in my outrage?
