Who knows, but I would say that they lack a sense of being a team. They think that by adding talented players every year that that will automatically bring them trophies. This has worked in the past, but there are so many teams now with a team concept and quality coaching that has changed all that.

Tommy Smith said before the game started that the galacticos have a less than stellar record in CL play in germany overall.
part of it is that they are going through a scoring drought which seems unbelievable with the talent on this team. but being a team, the drought has affected everyone.
they can't fall back on their defense, because it's never been one of their strengths.
Porto was one of the lowest scoring teams in the CL,yet they win it all last year because of their defense. It's not always pretty but it is effective.

I watched the game earlier today and Real Madrid was not just bad on defense, but the midfield was really awful. Helguera and Beckham was outlassed pretty much the whole match by the much maligned midfield duo of Freier and Robson Ponte (he played great) plus Ramelow. Figo was the only bright point for the Madrid side. They really need a world class DMC...I hope they don't buy Gerrard though :D

Pavon also remains the weakest link in the side. While Samuel's job did not get easier by having Salgado and Carlos going forward almost everytime.

Leverkusen is not bad. They have a good coach and I think they have four Brazilians who are either national team players or very close to it on their team, as well as several German national team players.

Leverkusen is kind of inconsistent, but on a good day, they can beat anyone - two weeks before, they destroyed Bayern with all their stars 4-1...then lost to Mainz (who just got promoted to the Bundesliga this year) 0-2.

Real looked more like a collection of individuals than a team.

Man, I recorded the game and watched it last night and couldn't believe how bad Real played. All those "stars" looked like crap. None of them played with any kind of heart, especially Zidane. I was really suprised b/c he is in my eyes a top 5 player in the world if not #1. That was the worst I have ever seen him, he was non-existent. Real reminded me of Team USA basketball, a bunch of overpaid arrogant egotistical players who think they should win just by stepping on the field. What a discrase!!!
If anyone wants to watch a real team watch Arsenal: I am by no means an Arsenal fan, but I watch their games b/c the way they play is the way soccer is supposed to be played, have any of you watched them this season? Wow!!! They move the ball around beautifully and are so unselfish.

Anyways, why doesn't ESPN show the other games, everyone else in the world gets to watch Man U and other Champions League games but we get stuck with ****ty ESPN American programing like Around da Boring and Poker championships.

How about some respect for Leverkusen? Real might have been bad, but they were also facing a pretty good opponent :).

HAHAAHHA im so happy im a BARCELONA FC fan and Real is really really bad theyre first two league games were against sub par teams and they won 1-0 both of them desperately seeking for the game to be over . Then all the news people here were saying that all that counts is the 6 points while Barcelona was winning there games 2-0 and 2-0 dominately and then won 3-1 in Glasgow in champions league match. If there is anyone to blaim for this real madrid team is the President or directors,

    ?????Michael Owen????? 12mill ??

Why ? they already have a world class forward Ronaldo, and also have in the bench MORIENTES who scored the most goals in last years CL....

    ?????Samuel??????Woody????? like 40 million ???

WTF ?? in spain theres like a dozen better players than that and for alot less....

    LOok at barcelona

    Deco,
    Belleti,
    Giuly,
Sylvinho All these players came for less and would be a big
    help to real right now.

Real is really hurting at the back right now. There is no solid defense, and there's no link between defense and midfield. It's killing them.

    Two options:

    1) Replace Makelele as soon as possible. He was the key.
    2) Get defenders back from injury, give Helguera Makelele's former spot.

Beckham, IMO, needs to go. He's just not good enough to play for one of the top teams in Europe.

I always liked barca b/c they used to be like the second Dutch national team...and they had my boy Rivaldo who has dropped off the face of the earth...anyways, I read somewhere that the Real president doesn't care that much about winning, he thinks that selling jerseys and and making $ off the team is more important and to make $ he spends on these big names who will attract fans. I think it's idiotic b/c ultimately winning will make you more money than having 11 stars.

    Gilberto
    Henry
    Viera
    Pires

That's four world cup champions in their starting lineup.

I don't know the breakdown of Bayern's team though, so I'm sure you'll point out how many world cup winners they have, right?

Well rivaldo thats what i thought too but i guess Beckham makes more money becauase of his looks rather than his play hes really sucking for two years with real madrid sorry to tell all the primier league fans here but This isnt the premier league and you need to pass the ball not lob it over the defense ;)

Nope...I was wrong...we only have two (Ze Roberto and Lucio) and one finalist (Kahn).
