I'm lucky...the C drive is failing slowly. So I copy all files to a new drive. It won't copy some system files that are open, so I use Backup (that uses shadow copy). It still warns that not all files will be copied. I restore to the new drive. Switch drives, and it won't boot from the new drive. Any ideas? Thx
If you mean that you installed the drive and tried to transfer the files in windows, there is not way the drive is going to boot up. You have to do a complete drive transfer through a DOS program or an imaging program to get everything correctly copied over and then you can put that drive in and boot off of it. I haven't bought a drive in a while but you usually get a disk that comes with the drive that lets you boot onto it and do a disk transfer that way. If not you can download it off the web and make a boot disk so you can do the transfer yourself. What type of hard drive did you buy? That way i can do some looking around to help you out.
every manufacturer provides a disk that will do a sector by sector copy of your old drive when you buy a new one. if you didnt get one with your drive, then you should be able to download it from their website. What did you get as a replacement?
Agreed. Get Symantec Ghost and it'll take care of you. BTW - don't be surprised if you have the same problems with your new drive: it may not be a hardware problem. -- droxford
Thanks for the head's up on the disk utilities, Stack24 and R2k. Appreciate that. Never knew those disks had helpful stuff on them. The copy went ok, but the system still won't boot to the new drive. Unfortunately I got an ultra ATA (Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 200GB 7200 RPM Ultra ATA/133) and my system apparently does not want to boot from it. I'm just going to shift data around and one of my other drives and use one of those. As for Ghost, I'll get it for backing-up the boot drive. Looks helpful.
Tried downloading Ghost about 8 times; failed. Spent 30 minutes on hold w/ Symantec support. Never got through. They never responded to my e-mail. Guess I won't be using Ghost after all.
this is probably a stupid question....but did you set your new drive as slave and the old one as master(witht he jumpers) and then do the disk to disk copy? and then after the copy, you shut down, change the jumpers to make the new one master....also..make sure you have them hooked to their proper positions on the 80 conductor cable. sometimes, that makes a difference....
R2K, Yes, I did. I've actually built several PCs, but I haven't had to transfer a boot disk recently since I generally reinstall the OS. Also, I don't tend to keep up with the idiosyncracies like some boards won't boot to ultra ata.
