Austin City Limits Festival I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned...at least not recently (sorry if there's some buried thread out there). Anyway, it's September 17-19. Just found out for sure I'm going, and after a failed attempt to get into the first one a couple of years ago, I'm psyched for the soon-to-be erased memories of incompetent box office personnel. I'll be looking for The Blind Boys of Alabama, Neko Case, Broken Social Scene, Ryan Adams, Franz Ferdinand, Los Lonely Boys, Cat Power, Josh Rouse, The Old 97s, Modest Mouse, My Morning Jacket, Trey Anastasio, The Wailers, The Pixies, American Analog Set, The Roots, Shelby Lynne, North Mississippi All-Stars, Elvis Costello, Spoon, Drive-By Truckers, Wilco, Cake and Ben Harper. Does anyone know the procedure on getting tickets other than by mail? They say delivery within 10 days, which is pushing it a bit at this point. Do they have will-call (my cursory overview of the site told me nothing)? Is it possible they'll sell out, or can I just go ahead and wait until Friday when I get down there? That sounds like a risky decision. I'm guessing no place in Houston is selling. Anyway, NEKO CASE!
There was a thread a while back when tickets first went on sale. I have my 3 day pass. At this point I'd probably go with will call. I'm a HUGE Pixies Fan, everything else is just gravy.
Here's where you'll find me... Friday: Toots & The Maytals Gomez Saturday: Big Head Todd & The Monsters Modest Mouse The Wailers The Pixies Sunday: The Roots Elvis Costello Wilco Ben Harper
When that gravy includes Elvis Costello, Wilco and Solomon Burke you have one of the best concert bargains of all time...I was reading where it was $75 for three days. Drooooooooool! Hey jealousy! I urge you and everyone else, see Solomon Burke. He's the finest soul singer ever!
Here are the acts I plan on trying to catch Friday Solomon Burke Gomez Los Lonely Boys or Sheryl Cow (or maybe part of both) Saturday Bighead Todd Modest Mouse or G-Love (part of both?) Trey Anistacio Pixies Sunday Guy Forsyth Mofro Elvis Wilco Ben Harper That is a lot of excellent music in 3 days.
id go ahead and get them online and pick them up will call. dont take any chances on it selling out. i bet the hippies will come en masse to see trey so saturday will probably end up selling out (pixies too, but their fans arent as fanatical as phish-heads). personally, i think 3 days might be overdoing it. some of the talent is pretty watered down, but im not complaining. i got my ticket for $75 back in march. ive been to the last two and the lineup here is easily the most solid yet. here's what im looking forward to... FRI - blind boys of alabama, broken social scene (saw them at coachella and they were great), toots & the maytals, rebirth brass band (an acl staple) SAT - cat power (i love her, but she sucks live), the gourds, modest mouse, my morning jacket and THE PIXIES (saw them at coachella and i got veclempt whilst watching them - my favorite all time band) SUN - earl harvin trio (drum master), calexico (great live band - indie-spaghetti western-mariachi music - check them out), antibalas afrobeat orchestra (if you like fela kuti you will like this), elvis costello, spoon and wilco.
I'm not sure how many days I'll be going, but this is my hopeful lineup: Friday: Tea Leaf Green The Slip Blind Boys of Alabama John Butler Trio Patty Griffin Los Lonely Boys Saturday: New Monsoon Old 97s The Gourds Modest Mouse My Morning Jacket Trey Anastasio Sunday: Patrice Pike North Missisippi All-Stars Jack Johnson Wilco Dirty Dozen Brass Band Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals
don't forget Franz Ferdinand dudes, they were sensational in the concerts downunder recently, don't miss em
Schedule conflict for me... Franz and Gomez play at the same time, same day, different stages. I saw them on a live webcast from some euro festival and they were pretty good, so having seen that, I am going to see Gomez instead, someone I haven't seen. Although Franz is playing in Houston 2 days before the ACL Festival... so I just may catch them down here.
They are playing there, too?! God, this show is awesome! I saw them here in Auckland. Seriously, there will be no better group than Franz Ferdinand. They totally rule. I think they are playing Houston soon, so they are well worth checking out.
Does anybody know any good camping places in the Austin area? Preferably near the festival, but quality camping beats out convenient location. There's no way I'm even going to bother looking into hotels nearby at this point...
lol yeah and on the steps in front of a church on the Drag... Just look for the spots where everyone avoids walking!
pedernales state park on 290 west of austin. krause springs in spicewood (up 71 about 30 minutes from austin) mckinney falls state park by the airport. not sure if you can camp there anymore though. pace bend on lake travis, also known as paleface. any parks along lake travis for that matter. hippie hollow if you want to get naked w/ a bunch of dirty old men.
Thanks, I'll check those out. I came across McKinney, but it says "public consumption...of alcohol...is prohibited". Is inside a tent public? Plus, the park closes at 10:00--does that mean I can't get to my tent after ten? (Obviously, I'm not an avid camper and I sound like an idiot to all you Boy Scouts.)
Why not? I would think San Marcos or other li'l towns by Austin would still have some economical rooms available.
