Not so certain such a charismatic candidate exists. Perhaps Newsome. Perhaps Mayor Pete if voters can get past his sexual orientation. Maybe Whitmer. Shapiro. Booker. Beshear. All have strong positives (youthful, telegenic, connect well with people) ... but all have some challenge they will be faced with.
stefanik so wants that vp job... blames trump's rape ruling on media and President Biden and refusing the answer the question.
I don't know enough about the Rock to know his political views but I could see someone like him being a Democratic demagogue. Progressive politics are also full of a lot of grievance and could very easily see a charismatic outsider running as a progressive pushing resentment of moneyed elites and historical grievances regarding race. I don't think it would take much to turn the language of Bernie Sanders about revolution and Elizabeth Warren of punishing the banks to stoke populist anger enough to win an election. Once in office such a leader demands absolute loyalty from their administration, undermines norms like removing the independence of DOJ, defies court rulings, and goes after critical media. And if they lose an election inflame their base with rhetoric that it was stolen by the moneyed power elite that are determined to keep the people poor and exploited. Basically a Leftwing Trump.
I just read the book The Happiest Man on Earth, the story of Auschwitz survivor Eddie Jaku. I'd definitely give this book 5 stars. It's such a a heroic story, that's filled with so many emotions, from horror, sadness, heartbreaking, courageous, fear, desperation, inspiration, friendship, strength, hope, and love. I wish more people could see how hate and lie fueled politics is such a horrific way to rule humanity, and how evil minds brainwashed people through history to do the unthinkable. An except from the book about the infamous Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass.... It wasn't just Nazi soldiers and fascist thugs who turned against us. Ordinary citizens, our friends and neighbours since before I was born, Joined in the violence and the looting. When the mob was done destroying property, they rounded up Jewish people - many of them young children - and threw them into the river that I used to skate on as a child. The ice was thin and the water freezing. Men and women I'd grown up with stood on the riverbanks, spitting and jeering as people struggled. 'Shoot them!' they cried. 'Shoot the Jewish dogs!' What had happened to my German friends that they became murderers? How is it possible to create enemies from friends, to create such hate? Where was the Germany I had been so proud to be a part of, the country where I was born, the country of my ancestors? One day we were friends, neighbours, colleagues, and the next we were told we were sworn enemies. When I think of those Germans relishing our pain, I want to ask them, 'Have you got a soul? Have you got a heart?' It was madness, in the true sense of the word - otherwise civilised people lost
trump keeps telling ridiculous and disproven lies... but the more offensive part, republicans willingly believe it and continue to support him.
trump going back to his 2016 campaign tactic... having people physically thrown out of his campaign events so that he can appear like the strong men he often admires (eg orban, putin, etc).
Great, great pull, Deb. And ladies and gentleman, that is primate behavior in a nutshell. Pretty ugly but good to understand. Amazing how relevant that quote feels to our dangerous present.
Well, It's a tax on imported goods. The tax burden could be on either the buyer or seller. It also could help American manufacturing. It's not an all good or all bad thing. Framing it this way is silly and partisan. Biden has kept the tariffs and I think that's overall a good thing.
Yeah, if they don't know they're paying his legal fees, and they think their donations somehow "save America" in some pure way, they are saps. If they do know they're paying his legal fees, well, that's their prerogative. Americans, including me, do all sorts of dumb and questionable things with money.
Hmm how is that going to play among her New York constituents? All in on the MAGA shitshow! Devin Nunez found work outside office licking Trump's toenails...
A jury found that Trump sexually abused Ms. Carroll. Courts ruled in 60+ post-2020-election lawsuits that the 2020 election is fine. Multiple grand juries indicted Trump on 91 criminal charges across four criminal cases. The court system has shifted quite a bit to the conservative side in the last two decades and has never been this conservative since most of our lifetimes. Yet, a majority of today's Republicans and some so-called non-MAGA conservatives and libertarians are rejecting the court system as just more of some liberal deep state. If it's not a cult, then what? AR?
The German writer Hannah Arendt coined the term “the banality of evil” to describe how otherwise ordinary people could perform such horrific acts.. The sad thing is that almost any group of humans can be convinced another group of humans needs to be wiped out. I heard similar things from Bosnia, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, and too many other places. Just looking at the rhetoric around the current situation with Gaza there is plenty of rhetoric calling for the destruction of either side.
