    No problem.

"While the situation with Damar Hamlin is very alarming and hope he makes a full recovery this shouldn’t dissuade people from playing sports or parents from letting their children play sports. Yes there is always a risk of what happened to Damar Hamlin or some other major injury. Injuries like these or ones where a player is paralyzed are very rare. At the same time there are many huge benefits to playing sports especially for youth in better overall mental and physical health.
As coaches and referees too it is also up to us to teach and enforce proper safe techniques. In the US coaches and referees for youth sports are already required to get certification in basic first aid and in concussion protocols.
So while we all hope for the best for Damar Hamlin we need to keep in perspective how rare this type of injury is and not let fear of something like this keep people away from all the benefits of sports."

"Just watched the video of the collapse of Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin. It looks like this could be a case of Commotio Cordis where a blow to the heart at a very specific incidence leads to heart fibrulation where the heart fails to beat properly. It is ofen fatal and has led to the deaths of young athletes. This is a risk for violent sports including martial arts. It is very rare though.
The good thing for Damar Hamlin is he got treatment right away and will likely have the best care."

    Thanks that means a lot.

As my handle implies I'm a coach of Judo and Jujitsu and concussions are a major risk. In my own career as a competitor I've had a few and as mentioned over the last 20 years we've been modifying the rules and other policies to deal with concussions especially among youth players. I know youth football and many other youth sports have been doing the same thing.

There is no such thing as zero risk but risk has to be weighed in perspective with benefit and I really believe the benefits of playing very physical and even aggressive sports far outweigh the risk.

Also if you're involved in youth sports as a parent or a coach I highly recommend this. We are required to get certification in this to be an official coach and referee.

No problem. It's really cool seeing people involved and genuinely caring.

I'm a big MMA fan so I'm familiar with the discipline it takes to not only coach but compete. That's awesome. You have an extremely good head on your shoulders. We need more like yourself.

I am involved in youth sports as a parent and I appreciate the link. I pretty much take somewhat of a backseat though despite having went through the AAU process myself. I think it all works itself out

    You're doing an awesome job.

Last night at Judo practice I heard there are new rules coming to Minnesota regarding combative sports that would include boxing, wrestling and all martial arts.

I’ve yet to see the rules but there is concern thst this could greatly limit if not an outright soft ban on martial arts.
