Amen Thompson’s jumper results are what happens when u shoot blindfolded with your off hand

if you’re not paying attention in the 1st row, one of his airballs might hit u in the head and make u spill your drink

bust is harsh but he’s not a good player and has a long way to go. It’s like Anthony Bennett, we didn’t need a whole season to know he wasn’t good and most likely won’t be good. Amen is so far behind his peers that it’s hard to imagine him being decent 2 seasons from now let alone good.

Lonzo managed to shoot 40% from 3 in college and 30% from 3 his rookie year even with that broken form. Amen was shooting 23% from 3 at the OTE level. Lonzo was actually a PG with PG skills also. Amen is significantly worse than rookie year Lonzo on offense. Lonzo was turning into a pretty solid player before his knee died on him and it would be great if Amen could reach that, but I don't see it.

Maybe nobody ever thought to teach him the right way to shoot.

One example mentioned of improving shooting is Lonzo Ball. His shot was about as ugly as Amen's (in different way). Lonzo's dad did not believe in changing a kid's shooting form. That's why his shooting had never been corrected. Lonzo shot 30% in his first NBA season, 33% in his second and 38% and better in his subsequent seasons.

yup, his shot will need a full rebuild like Lonzo's to have a shot at being passable. And Lonzo is an extremely rare case. history doesn't favor someone with a completely broken shot from form to execution. We've seen plenty of unconventional forms but are passable when it comes to actually putting the ball in the basket. The combination of both, not so much.

I personally don't think form matters that much as long as it goes in. Haliburton has the weirdest jumpshot I've ever seen. He's like two handed wrist flick chest passing from his forehead and it goes in everytime.

    Hali doesn't apply to Amen

His form isn't conventional but it has always worked for him. he didn't just start being a good shooter in the nba. Hes been a damn good shooter his entire career prior to the nba. It works for him because that's how he grew up and stayed with it. If he was bricking his entire life shooting like that then yeah he would need to rebuild that shot real quick at this level but he hasn't so it works for him.

Amen on the other hand: horrendous form and mechanics translates to that as a terrible shooter which he has always been aka rebuild necessary

    Y'all are funny.

Let's wait and see how he turns out.

He is a high ceiling/low floor prospect.

Thus far he has been the player I expected he would be.

If Udoka believes he needs to go to the Valley, then they will send him there.

That's basically LaVar Ball's philosophy. There have been indeed some good shooters with weird forms. Haliburton is the most obvious. Kevin Martin another one. (Some may include Shawn Marion, but Marion wasn't a very consistent shooter.) I think shooting form does matter. It's the same about pretty much every sports technique. There is a natural mechanic for the human body to do certain task (throwing, hitting, jumping, running, etc.) in the most effective way. There are individuals who somehow do it well with a different way, but they are exceptions rather than normal.

Thank you! The endless dissection and blabbering about Amen's shooting gives me a headache.

He was drafted as a PG/SG and if we view him as a guard then he is extremely far behind offensively. If we view him as a 3D SF with some passing and ball handling skills then he's missing the 3 part. Ime is playing him as a SF ahead of Bullock and Ime wouldn't play Amen just to give him reps. So I guess that's a point in your favor that he's at least ahead of Bullock.

I was completely against drafting him because of his inability to shoot and the level of competition he played against. He was like Jalen but in a worse league and I had already seen enough of Jalen by the end of last year. When they went with him I figured Udoka knew something I didn't so I started to have some hope but he has not shown anything on the court lately, like nothing, that makes me think he should have been anywhere close to the lottery.

Right now it looks like the Rockets need to invest long term cash into

    Sengun
    Smith
    Eason
    Whitmore

Cut bait sooner than later with Jalen and Amen (Amen if he hasn't improved after year 2)
