I remember for 2 straight seasons Eric Gordon shot like 31-32% from 3 and was chucking 7 threes a night because we were losing anyway. I used to laugh so hard when teams were stilling guarding him really far out at the 3 point line when I knew he was just going to brick it.
it's called hes a proven shooter a concept that alludes and the ironic thing is notice those two seasons and the players he was surrounded with. A whole lot of terrible spacing and bad basketball. it's no wonder he didn't want to be here anymore. notice how his averages go back to what they are. why? bc he's a proven shooter. you don't take 2 seasons out of over a decades worth of samples size and apply those 2 seasons only. that makes no sense. it's just like your ryan anderson comment claiming he shot 20% which he never did for the year while he was here You know what illustrates horrendous defense, someone who just sits there and lets these guys shoot. And since you laugh at these teams that did, well that pretty much says you would be horrific on defense. they ran at them for a reason and the reason is valid. that's defensive awareness and knowing personnel. now if these people are running out at westbrick which they don't because we've seen the wide area of freedom teams don't even bother guarding him out there, now that's something to laugh at for stupidity
For right or wrong, Jokic is a center. Pulling the opposing center out is more important for spacing around the basket for cuts. Also, I'd guess the center on Jokic's teams shoot better behind the arc unguarded than the center on Lebron's teams (i.e., it is easier to have 4 shooters on the court when the center is one of them).
I personally think EG just stopped giving a shet for 2 seasons, he just launched it from 30 feet whenever he got the ball because we were gonna lose anyway. In Ryan Andersons case I was more talking about the tail end of his career, he was just shooting really badly due to shattered confidence and never recovered. Proven shooter or not, I think it's essentially based on the opposing coach's risk tolerance on what they want to give up. I don't think it's all black and white. Especially in the playoffs teams will adjust based on if a player is in a slump or not. I think Jimmy Butler is another good example. In that year where he was sub 30 percent in 3 pointers and got swept in the playoffs the Bucks mostly played his drive on defense and live with him taking the 3's. I don't think teams are letting him shoot now because he's out of the slump for a while. Either way, I think being proven a lot of times might not be based on statistics. I think Giddey might be a good example, even Scottie Barnes. People were not guarding his 3's for 2 seasons
he probably did. Those two seasons were pure trash. the motivation to play well is pretty low. it's no secret he wanted out for a long time after they foolishly gave cp3 away Ryan's end of career was meaningless. he played 0 meaningful minutes and barely hung on to a roster spot when he could. then just went away No it isn't. It's entirely based on whether you're a proven shooter period. That's what high iq folks look at. High iq folks look at who is on that floor and weaknesses that can be given up. if youre not a proven shooter who is a relevant threat, you won't be guarded out there. it's black and white. nobody is guarding westbrick, donkey, claxton, zubac, Ihart, Allen, Gobert, Bam, Sabonis, Nurkic, Lively, Sengun, Amen, at the 3 point line People still aren't guarding Giddy at the line. But he still inconsistently hits them which is why they're still not guarding them especially when they have a long list other stuff that's are a much higher priority on a damn good okc team. There's no such thing as guarding everything and every action. teams live with giving up something when truly scouting another team which is why weaknesses and holes are always exposed. His minutes have gotten chopped to barely playing half a game this year because of his inability to consistently space the floor. and he's been a full time starter since hes been in the league at 30 mins+ As far as Barnes goes, Toronto stinks. Teams don't truly get up to play teams like them. they have so many weaknesses that it doesn't really matter more often than not
Players like Jokic are special because they are centers who can shoot from outside -- and are good play makers, which most shooting big men like Dirk are not. Being able to pull the opposing center outside opens up so many things if you can both shoot and pass and can handle the ball.
I agree and I'll take it one step further - I can't believe kids aren't working on shooting in the first place. It's actually insane to me that these kids are playing basketball for like 50+ hours a week and they don't practice shooting.
I understand that argument completely. Pulling a center away from the rim is way more valuable than pulling away a guard. So Jokic shooting 34% has a more positive effect for his team than Lebron shooting the exact same percentage for his team. However, Lebron's been playing in the league for 21 years and the narrative of him needing shooters has been there even in comparison to other players that shoot worse than him. Luka and Jimmy Butler shoot worse career percentages, Jimmy much worse, than Lebron and no one thinks they need a Kevin Love or Chris Bosh type of big man to win. They have centers that can't shoot at all but it works.
Perhaps they said that about Lebron because he was trying to beat Durant/Thompson/Curry on the same team.
people only talking about Amen’s lack of 3 point shooting…boy can’t hit free throws either his in-game athleticism isn’t all that eye popping either…people were talking like he was gonna be a young Bron athlete, a “top 5 NBA athlete”
It's why I compared him to a younger Lonzo (His early LA days) and people for some reason got upset at it. Broken jumpshot, athleticism that's not functional in the halfcourt, shaky confidence and passive. Even Lonzo in those days was miles ahead to what Amen is right now. Lonzo was a better scorer, rebounder, playmaker and defender.
Yep, no one thinks it is a good idea to surround Luka with three more shooters. Bam Adebayo is a bad man. If I was going to try to run a team in today's NBA with more than one non-shooter, him, AD, or Giannis would need to be one them. Maybe I'm missing someone.
We obviously and understandably have a lot of Silas related trauma on this board. But IMO we are really dinging a kid that we really haven’t seen play. Not to mention, he is essentially playing out of position. I’m seeing a prospect that is struggling where most rookies struggle BUT is playing very good defense for the most part, along with seemingly making the right pass and rebounding aggressively. i’d like to see him play 15 minutes a game with the ball in his hand.
It's too early to tell. He needs to stop throwing fancy cross-court passes, other than that, he's fine. We know he can't shoot, but he plays adequate defense to stay on the court. He is a better rebounder than the number shown. If he can improve his shootings and ball-handling skills, he may be a better fit than FVV as he can relieve the rebounding pressure on Sengun. Cam no doubt is impressive, yet that doesn't make Amen a bust.
This is an interesting comp, I like it. Didn't Lonzo have a 30 point triple double in his second ever nba game though? I think he was a lot further along than Amen. The comparison is still good, though, with the jumper and the type of athleticism. I also like it because Lonzo actually fixed his jumper and was shooting well over 40% on high volume before his injury. I can pretend in my mind that Amen is going to get there too.
