Man, Did the Republicans do this to the DNC? This is only going to insure 4 more years for Bush. People don't want to be associated with a party of wack jobs, fair or unfair, policies or no policies. DD
just happened, there is very little info right now. they showed some footage on NY1 of a protester being dragged out and the conventioneers cheering. they don't know how may were involved or how they got in.
When I saw the title of this thread in all caps I was really scared it was some kind of terrorist plot or something. Not people wanting this administration/party to step up to bat for the world-wide fight against the Aids epidemic.
When did this country turn into a bunch of wusses? We're supposed to condemn and dismiss anyone who has the audacity to interrupt a partisan political event. There are 40,000 Americans screaming, but the house crumbles when five Americans scream the wrong slogans. Worse, we're then urged to ask "What will Osama think?" when fellow Americans criticize the government *we* put there. Are Americans really so scared that we're afraid to let fellow Americans voice their opinions, for fear of what Osama bin Laden might think? Who gives a flying f*ck what terrorists think? This isn't their country -- it's OUR country. And it's great because of its freedoms, not its limitations.
green.. this is a high security event.. they do not have permission to be in the building.. they should be allowed to go into a high security zone that they have no permission to be in????
I just saw a tape of it.. they were out of control .. said they were being questioned about how they got "the hottest ticket in town" or something.. freedom of protest etc is nice, but it would be impossible to have an event with people acting like they were..
Apparently it was 11 aids activists from ACT UP. They had credentials and infiltrated a republican youth rally being held in the Garden. Good for them!
About a half dozen protesters provoked a brief but noisy struggle with convention security officials just before noon today after interrupting a speech by White House Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr. Despite heavy security inside and around Madison Square Garden, the protesters managed to slip onto the convention floor and sat in the Wisconsin section, just steps from the stage where Card was speaking. President Bush's daughters, Jenna and Barbara Bush, introduced Card as part of a a special event for young Republicans. Shortly after Card began speaking, one protester blew a whistle, and the group stood up. They stripped off business attire they had donned to help get past security, revealing T-shirts with slogans decrying Bush policies on HIV/AIDS and international debt relief, and began chanting, "Bush lies, people die." Dozens of young Republicans from Wisconsin were sitting around the group of protesters, and the GOP faithful stood up to loudly cheer "four more years," wave pro-Bush signs and do whatever they could to drown out the protesters. Some young Republicans scuffled with the protesters, and at least one GOP youth said he was hit. Card barely missed a beat, pausing to say, "Thank you, thank you." Numerous reporters and television cameramen quickly converged around the melee, making it difficult for security officials to reach the scene. Once there, security officers dragged the protesters out of the convention hall. As they were being hauled down a flight of stairs, one young Republican yanked a plastic whistle from the mouth of one of the protesters. One protester said he was a member of the group ActUp. Afterwards, some of the young Republicans said that just moments before the ruckus erupted, the protesters had mingled freely on the floor, falsely professing their fondness for Bush. "We're trying to sort things out," said Secret Service spokeswoman Ann Roman. "Some people are currently being detained and interviewed." http://www.dailykos.com
Infiltrated? By 'about half a dozen' (the reporter couldn't count to six and needed to estimate???). Oh how i love media news.
Mourning dad crashes Grand Old Party Fernando Suarez del Solar wasn't very political before his son, a 20-year-old marine named Jesus, was killed in Iraq last year. Since then, though, the 48-year-old has left his job to spend all his time agitating against the war, and last night, he took his message to Madison Square Garden. A friend lent him a media pass, and at around 9 p.m., as Arnold Schwarzenegger began speaking, he unfurled a three-foot-wide sign with his son's picture and the words "Bush lied, my son died." A group of delegates immediately called security, which ushered him into Madison Square Garden's lobby. There, he says, he gave a few interviews while some passing Republicans jeered, saying, "Get out of here. You're unpatriotic." More security showed up, including members of the FBI and the Secret Service. "I say to them, 'I pay with my son's life for my freedom of speech, but you can arrest me, it's OK.' The police said, 'no sir.'" "The surprise for me," says del Solar, "is some people, Republican people, say to me, 'I'm sorry for your loss, you are right.' About seven, eight persons say, 'I am Republican, but you are correct, this war is not necessary.'" http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/index.html
Thanks Chump. That has to be tough. Kerry asked 'How do you ask someone to be the last person to die for a lie?' I wonder how you ask anyone to die for a lie. It obviously has caused this man a lot of suffering. I think he has to take as much comfort as he can knowing that his son died serving honorably for his country, bu I can understand how the anger would always be lying near the surface.
